Senator Boxer Holds Campaign Fundraiser In Downtown Long Beach by Ryan ZumMallen | Archive | 08.20.10 |

Photo by Ryan ZumMallen. 1:45pm | Just mere days after her challenger held a press conference in Long Beach, incumbent U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer (D) held a private fundraiser at the downtown Long Beach restaurant of La Traviata on Friday morning to rally her supporters as she gears up to face Carly Fiorina (R) in the general election this November. While the Long Beach Chamber of Commerce has announced support for Fiorina, two of the city's highest-profile politicians were by Boxer's side this morning as both Congresswoman Laura Richardson and Mayor Bob Foster sat and smiled while Boxer delivered a speech to applause from the packed restaurant. The event was hosted by the Long Beach Democratic Club, the LAMBDA Democratic Club, and the Long Beach Young Democrats among others. It's clear that a central issue in this race will be the state's economy and employment rate, as Fiorina has used her background as a CEO - though her results at the helm of HP are debatable - to present herself as business-friendly and pro-jobs in her Long Beach appearances. Boxer obviously recognizes the challenge and spoke at length about the measures needed to restore the California job market, with the slogan Jobs For California emblazoned across campaign posters. As a three-term incumbent, she has proven vulnerable to criticism of being anti-business, and recent polls show Fiorina holding a lead. Both have spent time in Long Beach recently, largely because of the importance of the local harbors and ports as a source of employment, industry and a barometer for the nation's economy. Also for the city's reputation for manufacturing; one that, frankly, has gone sour in recent years as many large corporations have dwindled or left altogether, taking jobs with them. Expect to see both candidates in the South Bay area - if not Long Beach - many times before November rolls around. joe NO MORE BOXER !!!!!!! FED UP I SECOND THAT MOTION! NO MORE BOXER!!!! John M. Fentis And what would you prefer, Joe? A Carly Fiorina who, like Whitman, attempts to buy a political office and doesn't really answer to her constituents...only the special interests that help elect her? I'm no Boxer fan, but, like most elections, it's always down to the lesser of two evils. I'll take a candidate who is responsible, transparent, and accountable for her actions. Unfortunately, neither of these two measure up so I'll take the lesser of the two evils....Ms. Boxer Paul Can you folks name 3 things Senator Boxer has done that have negatively effected you? Meanwhile, Fiorina ran HP into the ground and was fired for doing so. That's what you want? DISGUSTED TIME TO KICK HER OUT.... TOO MANY YEARS OF OVERSPENDING... TIME FOR A NEW PERSPECTIVE ! FED UP 3 things.....why don't we start with education and the disaster called the No Child Left Behind Act. 28 years of Boxer and Feinstein, California is a MESS!!! I'm through with politics and politicians as usual. Business minds and business sense is a breath of fresh air California needs. After all, the state along with every city throughout California,is already on the brink of bankruptcy! How much more damage can Whitman and Fiorina do and if they do, as far as I'm concerned it won't be their fault. It will be every self-serving, pompous, over-paid California, state and federal, senator and representative sitting in office right now! 28 YEARS!!! GOODBYE BOXER!!! CHARLIE Well here what I thought was another earthquake when my crystal chandelier started to swing this morning, was really BB Boxer was in town. You know when it is said every good thing comes to an end? So do the bad things and I think we've had enough of BB's economy and embarrassment - to permanent retirement! :>) BUGGA BOO BOO Talk about boo boo's - Boxer takes the cake... Charlie the Tuna Sorry Barbara... Chicken Little You gotta be kidding? Rich If Laura Richardson endorses her...she must be on the take, and not connected to reality. Do not trust any of those in the photo...Hello Mayor Foster, Yes. YOU TOO! jane How does that guy keep that La Traviata place open? Does anyone remember him nearly getting deported for a domestic situation? No? I can't believe this town, I now consider all public officials corrupt unless proven otherwise. Barbara Boxer will never get my vote, I will write in a candidate if that's the only option. I am a life long democrat and I intend to vote anti-incumbent from now on. Our entire government is corrupt. This is motivating me to show up solely for the purpose of voting anti-incumbent. Juan Pardell Thank you Jane for providing the best perspective on this entire article. Anyone who follows the lead of a politician, whether Democrat or Republican, is a fool. Both political parties are to blame for the sorry fiscal shape of our federal, state and municipal governments. Belmont Bob I was really surprised when I read that Barbara Boxer had supporters. Why? Go Carly. Eric I was there and she impressed me more than I thought she would. Awesome sense of humor and she talked about helping small businesses and saving jobs unlike the ugly snake Fiorina who outsourced tons of jobs at HP when she was CEO. She also wants to do offshore drilling....killing our coast and coastal jobs. Is that who you want to vote for? No thanks, I'll stick with Boxer... LB Dem I was hoping that BB would be challenged by another Dem, preferably a progressive Dem, for this election, but i think the Dem Establishment didn't want to challenge her. too bad. But now that she is the candidate, i will vote for her again because the thought of Carly winning that seat is repulsive. people who think she will be better than BB are just ignorant and should do their own research on their candidate. and for the fools that think BB had anything to do with our financial problems in CA are in denial that their precious Governor messed up this state with the help of the republican minority. Maybe, We dems should let the repubs win so we can be the minority and run the state the way we want....just a thought... Jane If the democrats allowed an alternative, who would it be? Does anyone know? Are there any up and coming people? I don't like the republican option but if I could I would vote out every single incumbent and start over. Even if that meant getting candidates that I don't want. The ones I vote for don't represent me or most Americans, IMO. What difference does it make. If my candidates don't represent me what difference does it make who gets elected? I'm totally serious. Incumbents out, including municipal and state government. The status quo has no incentive to change and they all work for big money. Period. We need to clean house from top to bottom. Larry Politics is the art of the possible. That said, I think Barbara has been a strong voice for the people of California in DC. Government is not business, it is there to provide for the common good. Business is there to provide a profit for the stock holders period, not to provide jobs, not to pay taxes, not to stay in our town or the next. But if you think you want a business person to help California it wouldn't be Carly. Please find out the facts, how she almost sunk HP, how she was forced out for unethical dealings and how she worked to only enrich herself at her employees expense. The fact is it could be much worse than Barbara. You don't have to look any further than the govenator. Grey Davis wasn't a great govenor or even a average govenor but he was much better than what we got. wonkadonk Too much spending by Boxer? Uh - hello? California gets $1.18 from DC for every dollar we give. Sounds like she's bringing home the bacon to me.
