Judy C. Hi Dennis: In our article we mentioned the READ program. This program is designed for children to read to animals. Luckily, there are many reading programs throughout our country that provide the same loving and understanding service to children from the animals and their guardians! This has proven to be extremey helpful, as animals are non- judgemental and the children are comfortable reading aloud to them. Also, such animal shelters as, Pasadena Humane Society, who take the time to do the same for children with their reading to animals program. Animals give the children their support and I am sure the children would be delighted about the reading- to- animals program at, Long Beach Animal Care Services! I am certain that each reader that attended the Pet Literacy program would be every bit as supportive to the children as they were to the shelter animals. I commend them for their support! Miles Nevins wrote a great article about the rabbit population on the LBCC campus but it seems to have been removed from the archives because Miles is not presently a contributor. I imagine that if you e-mailed either Ryan or Shaun, they could help somehow. Judy and I have always maintained that pet overpopulation is a people problem. We've focused on cats and dogs and only touched on rabbits, and we're grateful to Ryan for having gone the distance. I'll go so far to say, "Wish we'd written this." Rabbits, too, are examples of human irresponsibility as a cause of pet overpopulation and animal suffering: Let's buy Dick and Jane a bunny for Easter and then dump her at the campus when she gets big and where she'll be happy and eat lots of grass and be there with all her wild bunny friends who'll beat the living daylights out of her. Thanks, volunteers and vets. No better venue for humane education than a school. Wish that this could be extended to Eldorado Park. linked references Rabbits Are Not Easter Bunnies: Living With Rodents by Judy & Kate | Pet Post | 04.08.09 In the relative wild, as Miles Nevin said in an excellent LBPOST.com article, the bunnies get beaten up and sometimes killed by the wild rabbits. “It’s their turf,” Griffith said http://www.lbpost.com/life/pets/2285 Keith A "Hopping Through History: The Story Of The LBCC Rabbits:" by Miles Nevin is at: http://www.lbpost.com/newsdesk.php?id=2245&item=2061 Copy and paste the segments together into your web browsers location window to view the "rest of the story" Dennis Test3 This is paragraph 1.
