Disneyland Mexican at Tequila Jack's

IMG 0726

My friends and I were in search of a margarita in the afternoon sun, and we decided to try out Tequila Jacks. We scored a table right at the edge overlooking the boats bobbing like apples in Rainbow Harbor. It really is a pretty view.

Nino's Italian Restaurant: Better than Ever

ninos cropped

Dianne and I were looking for someplace to have dinner last Friday night, and I suggested that we go to Nino's to see how they were doing since the Kitchen Nightmares filming that we had attended. As many of you know, the filming and transformation was one of great change for this family-owned Italian eatery, which has been in Bixby Knolls since 1958. With not only changes to the menu, but also many stylistic changes to the décor inside and out, you can see, smell, and feel the difference.

This relatively new breakfast joint will hopefully have the resilience of the duck, as readers are wowed by the restaurant's breakfast offerings (particularly the chicken fried steak and Monte Cristo sandwich).

Best Cambodian Restaurant: Phnom Penh Noodle

From the outside, Phnom Penh Noodle—aka “The Shack”—looks just like the house it was built into decades ago. But between the hours of 6AM and 3PM, the renovated wood interior is bustling with a diverse breakfast and lunch crowd scrambling for dirt cheap bowlfuls of flavorful Cambodian noodle soup and plates of stir-fried delicacies.

Best Place to Get an Authentic Taco: Taqueria La Mexicana

tacos-550x318

With more than 40% of the city’s population claiming Latino heritage, there were bound to be a lot of good contendors for the Best Authentic Taco category, but, unfortunately, none can compare to Taqueria La Mexicana’s, both in quality and accessibility.

Best Barista: Jay at Portfolio

jayblomerportflio

Kerstin Kansteiner may be Portfolio's owner, but 13-year veteran Jay owns the place. He's not just there most evenings, he's fully present, engaged with not just the patron in front of him but with the front room, the back room, even what's gong on outside.

L'Opera

IMG 0677

The late evening spring sun cascaded in over the urban backdrop. The interior is spacious and could easily accommodate large groups, but it retains an intimate quality, and would make for a perfect date night. It also works magnificently for just going out to eat with friends who love and appreciate good food and wine.

Crockpot Picadillo

IMG 3793

Picadillo is a flavorful Cuban dish made with ground beef and a sauce prepared from simmering tomatoes, green olives, bell peppers, cumin, and spices. My first time was at a friend’s engagement party where her and her mother-in-law made huge batches of it. I could not have enough.
