Whole Lotta Rhythm Goes Down At Long Beach Funk Fest

11:00am | Huge crowds flocked to downtown Long Beach this Saturday for the 2nd annual Long Beach Funk Fest, featuring two stages of non-stop music from some truly funkadelic acts.

With one stage located in the middle of a closed down Pine Avenue and the other occupying the nearby Promenade, fans could roam from one musical set to the next, passing by live graffiti and paint artists, breakdancing competitions, trashcan drummers and much more. I truly had a funky good time.

The music started early with DJ’s spinning new and classic records by noon on Saturday. But the action really began to heat up as the sun started to sink, with legendary funk and rock n’ roll artist

Jimmy Castor revving up the crowd. Click here to read an interview that Castor gave to LBPOST.com music columnist Steve Propes last week, and click the video below to watch his live performance of his 1982 hit “E-Man Boogie.” Drum solo!

As Castor wrapped up, the band Bloco Nove and their guests Delta Nove turned up the heat on Pine Avenue with their combination of guitar, brass, keyboard and a whole lotta percussion. People were literally dancing from the rooftops as they grooved along to this set.

But no one was going to overshadow the grand finale, as the soul sisters Ladies Of P-Funk, with help from the Brides of Funkenstein and Parlet, brought out the classics to put this Funk Fest to bed. Watch as their powerful grooves send the crowd into frenzy and everyone in attendance lends their voice to the funk.

See you next year!

THANK YOU to the City of LB and Bobby Easton for another awesome Funkfest, this one better and better attended than the first! I can't wait until 2011!

Had a blast!

The bands were great and crowd was too. The issue raised all day long was the confusion in the lay out. Last year the whole event was on Pine Ave and everyone had a blast and the street benefited. This year it was broken up between Pine and the parking lot next to the Promenade. It was confusing and it killed half of Pine Ave for the day. The DLBA needs to step out of the planning for these events and just provide the funding. Their tampering just messes everything up...all...of....the...time

Savepine? Do the pine stree business owners really think they are th eonly ones in downtown long beqach and deserve ALL of the business? As an attendee, I hated the stage on Pine because it was crowded and people were on top of each other. I ended up going to the stage in the big open lot because it was far more enjoyable to waych bands and to breathe. Then when I took a break I walked over to Georges nd let me tell you, those restaurants were far busier on a Saturday afternoon they they ever are so don't tell me it killed there business. I am so sick of the savepine group specifically about 5 restaurant owners wanting everything exactly their way and ignoring that we have a diverse city with several different neighborhoods downtown. Good for the DLBA for not always siding with the biggest whiners.
