After fourteen years of leading the Long Beach veterans housing complex—known as U.S. Vets - Long Beach—that assisted more than 550 people at any one time, Stephen J. Peck has been appointed President of U.S. Vets.

“I am honored to be appointed as President of U.S. VETS,” said Peck, in a press release. “I am committed, along with the U.S.VETS management team, to continue moving the organization forward

in a positive direction and to continue to provide quality services to veterans.”

Peck is a former Marine Corps Lieutenant and Vietnam veteran who began his work with veterans services by helping establish the inaugural U.S. Vets site in Inglewood in 1993. In 1996, he became the organization's Director of Community Development and served as the first Site Director for the Long Beach complex, known as the Villages At Cabrillo which would eventually grow to become the organization's largest site.

The LBPOST.com profiled Peck and the site in this July 2008 article. He talked extensively about the struggle to become known in the veteran community, and the method they use to assist those who need help.

"We want to create a continuum of care so they can move seamlessly from one program to another," Peck said when interviewed for that article.  "The goal is to get them back to the workforce.  They sooner they can do that, the sooner they'll begin feeling better about themselves."

Peck also developed multiple U.S.VETS signature programs such as the Non-Custodial Fathers Program, ADVANCE Woman’s Program, and the Veterans Re-Entry Project (VRP).

After being appointed Senior Vice President earlier this year, Peck takes over the largest non-profit veterans services organization in the country. Former President and CEO Dwight Radcliff passed away earlier this year.

Stephen J. Peck , first of all I want to say U.S. Vets is really wonderful the way it helps so many vets. My story is probally one in a million due to the treatment I received there from the guy in charge of me named - Da Di Ci. which caused me to go homeless for 1 1/2 years. He kind of broke the rules and allowed me to do a contract painting job. I was in the middle of the $1,200.00 job when Da Di Ci stops me on the road when I was going to the job I was half done with and on contract to finish. And he insisted I walk away from the job and go job search with him & Steve. Of course I thought he lost his mind because I had to finish the job. And besides I had filled out the paperwork to move into permanent housing on Cabrillo and this job was allowing me to pay 3 months rent in advance. When I didnt bow down to Da Di Ci's ridiculous demands he had the RA'S take my sheets, pillows and blankets off the bed and made me sleep that way my last two weeks there. I was so upset and disappointed because of the embarrassing treatment I received that I chose to live homeless rather than be around the people that treated me so terrible and did not move into permanent housing that I worked so hard to get. They probally deserved to be sued for a million dollars. But the good that came from all this was I became the Birdman of long beach and found my calling. But I am still angry for the unfair treatment I received there after working so hard to improve my life. I worked harder there to accomplish things then I ever did. I volunteered at Petsmart for Noah's Ark Animal Rescue, I fed all the cats on base everynight, I catered weddings on weekends while there for the cook at Cabrillo. I went all over town putting homemade painting signs on ATM machines. I was so proud of my accomplishments there and this was what I got in return. So please Stephen Peck please use your position to make sure this never happens to another veteran at Cabrillo again. Dan Lubniewski - USMC - animalrescuer131@yahoo.com - Birdman of long beach
