Today, we invite you to be a part of our effort to recognize the very best teachers in Long Beach.
Ten teachers will be selected based on nominations that you make - simply leave your nomination in the Comments section below! The top ten list will ultimately be determined by our editorial board and a team of committed posters.
Long Beach is home to one of the most reputable public school districts in the nation, two successful charter schools, a network of private and parochial institutions, a community college that is an integral part of our local economy and a nationally ranked public university. Think about your experience with a special teacher, the experience of your child at a local school, and leave a nomination below.
Last year we introduced the original feature on the best teachers in Long Beach. More than 75 students, parents, fellow teachers and community leaders responded, and now it's time to ask the question again:
Who are Long Beach’s Best Teachers?
Today, we begin nominations for our second annual contest. The top ten list will be announced on Monday, May 11, 2009.
But, beyond these accolades (and many others) the truest measure of her teaching excellence over the course of her thirty plus year career, is that she consistently and on a daily basis emphasizes scholarliness and ethical citizenship among her students, promotes parent-teacher collaboration, assists her fellow teacher colleagues, has served as a master teacher to a number of university student teachers, and is well respected by administrators through-out the LBUSD.
Tish Bonner is, to put it simply, the kind of teacher we would all wish to educate our children and be an honored member of our community.
Is the best teacher! She loves teaching the third grade challenges her students, my son included, to excel!

DIANE iS good teacher, one who is always willing to help his/her students. She doesn't stop teaching when the bell rings,
reaches out to students after class, and knows that some need extra attention or assistance. I think there are alot of people out there who belief this to be true.
These are just a few examples of the progress she's made with her class, not including the progress she's made with special ed. students who are not in her class. On top of having to do endless IEPs, emails, and phone calls, she volunteers for the Student Learning Community "COMPASS"- a program for general education students that focuses on the arts. She is also an advisor for Best Buddies, a club that partners general ed. students with special ed. students. She held three training session to educate general education students about students who have disabilities and has organized many events for the club which promote inclusion of our special ed peers as well as provide opportunities for general ed students and special ed students to learn from each other. She puts the needs of the students, both those who are in her class and those who are not, first. Her room is a second home to many general education students who need a safe, caring place to go. The first to say "It's possible," the last to give up, I nominate Mrs. Weinberg.
Great teachers have clear boundaries between themselves and their students while making their students feel important and as if they really know them (but do not have personal information that shows they know them on a personal level).
Great teachers inspire their students to think for themselves and expand themselves into trying new ways of thinking, thinking from another point of view, and how to follow their own path and not the path of others (be independent thinkers and do-ers without judging others). Vote for Diane Nyquist for Teacher of the year!
Art is alive and well in Room 10. Kids plaster animals, craft for holidays, use costumes for oral reports, build ginger bread houses, set up leprechaun traps, and more, as she helps students utilize all of their senses for learning. The magic continues with the numerous guest readers she has hosted in her classroom, from her students’ parents to Superior Court Judge Charles Sheldon (who has been visiting her students for 20 years and reciprocates an invitation to his courtroom), Dr. King Alexander (CSULB President); Chief of Police Anthony W. Batts; and Mayor Bob Foster; among many distinguished guests. She orchestrates a broad range of field trips, from ballets and musicals, to a visit to the local courthouse and Main Library. Finally, an old upright piano, which she plays daily while the class sings folksongs that brighten up (and break up) the day clearly vibrates the joy and gratitude she expresses when she says, “I am the luckiest person on earth to have this job.” A sentiment reciprocated by countless parents and students of Room 10.
Sincerely,
The Parents and “Scholars” of Room 10

I really appreciate her effords.
Long Beach Polytechnic highschool. Ms. Ballard is an
outstanding english teacher who, unlike most, respectfully treats us
like the young adults that we are. Her teaching methods are
strict but beneficial. She pushes all her students to do
their best. I believe she sees more potential in all of us
than we see in ourselves. Ms. Ballard also shares personal
experiences which adds fun to each lesson. Her outgoing, fun
personality makes it a pleasure to be in class. I feel honored
to be able to have a teacher that sincerely cares about
their students future and is there to help prepare.
Mrs. Carter definitely deserves to be in the top ten list.
Dr. Dean is unparallel to any other teacher when it comes to enthusiastic analogies, relating effectively the material in the classroom with real life scenarios in a fun enjoyable manner. As well as showing patriotism to our country, he demonstrates his passion the way towards his academic fields. He is a teacher that challenges your academic weaknesses to become part of your strengths. In the classroom he also reminds the student of three essential words for success, naming them “The Three R’s”: Rigor, Relevance, and Relationship. Dr. Dean also tends to be flexible and honest. He is open to questions from students, and if he does not know the answers he will honestly admit it that he does not know.
when it is at the last minute. She embodies what RAM HIGH is all about.
Hickman for being one of the best teachers in Long Beach.
They all have different teaching styles but yet are so effective in creating an exciting atmosphere; a place where younger students want to go, an environment where they want to do better and impress. In all my years of being a student, I most learned from teachers that set the bar high and acknowledge the achievements. I am a successful High School student now passing California High School Exit Exam on the first try. Because these 3 teachers made learning and being at school COOL!
