Married Lesbian Couple In Long Beach To Discuss Prop 8

9:45am | Robin Tyler and Diane Olson, plaintiffs in the lawsuit challenging Proposition 8, will appear in Long Beach Thursday night, July 29th and share their thoughts and experiences. Their attorney, Gloria Allred, filed a lawsuit on their behalf which was consolidated with the cases of others and became part of the movement for marriage equality that Tyler had worked toward for many years. On June 16, 2008, Tyler and Olsen received an official marriage license and were married in the presence of family, friends and media.

After the passage of Proposition 8 in 2008, the California Supreme Court accepted three lawsuits (Strauss et al. v. Horton, Tyler et al. v. State of California et al., and City and County of San Francisco et al. v. Horton et al.) challenging Proposition 8 and said that it would hear the cases together, but denied the requests to stay its enforcement, which meant that legally recognized same-sex marriages in California would halt until the case is settled.  
 
Thursday, July 29th, Tyler and Olsen will speak prior to the 9:00pm screening of the film, “8: The Mormon Proposition” at the Art Theatre. The film, narrated by Oscar winning screen-writer/actor director Dustin Lance Black,  is a detailed expose of the Mormon Church's historic involvement in the promotion & passage of California's Proposition 8 and the church's decades-long campaign against LGBT human rights.

The screening is this month's selected feature for "Out at the Movies," which is presented by Artful Thinking Organization, a nonprofit organization committed to education and funding breast cancer and HIV/AIDS research projects. Same sex couples in California who want to get married are anxiously awaiting a decision as U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker reviews the case. The Art Theatre is located next door to the Center on Fourth Street.
