Three Arrested In Burglary Ring, Hitting Local Fitness Centers by Ryan ZumMallen | Archive | 08.20.10 |

Image courtesy Long Beach Police Department. 9:00am | Three suspects have been arrested after allegedly committing about 100 burglaries at fitness clubs around Long Beach, and police have seized identification cards, credit cards, wallets and gym bags that were found in the suspects' homes. They are also suspected of auto theft. The suspects have been identified as 18-year old Komsan Suon, 19-year old Marvin Empleo and 19-year old Mick So, all Long Beach residents. All three were booked for commercial burglary, conspiracy to commit commercial burglary, possession of burglary tools and possession of stolen property. They are being held at the Long Beach County Jail on $20,000 bail. Police also impounded four vehicles as evidence. Upon investigation, Police found that the suspects would enter different locations of the same fitness gym as members, then use shims to open lockers and remove personal belongings before re-locking the lockers.Often, the suspects would do the same thing at multiple gyms in one day. It was apparently a very lucrative business. Authorities say that one suspect bought cars, furniture and home electronics. Sometimes, purchases were made with the credit cards that they had stolen. Police advise gym-goers should never leave valuables in their locker, even when locked. Use locks that require a key, because combination locks are easy to open with homemade tools. Police say that the fitness club provided key information that led to the arrests and that the investigation is still ongoing. If you have any information about these thefts, or if you believe that you've been a victim, contact Detectives Robert Bernesen and Robert Trout at 562.570.5878.

Newportfiji The cash looks familiar. I think it is mine. Can I just come by and pick it up? Good work LBPD. Perhaps we should adopt Middle East practices of cutting off fingers of thieves. It would stop this type of garbage behavior. NewportFiji tps good thing they didn't steal keys then cars then break into homes. They kept it "small time." Victim These guys are already out of jail seein the lite-- "...about 100 burglaries!" When was LBPD gonna let folks know this was going on? At 150? Great they got 'em, but could of happened, oh, 20 or 30 burglaries ago, don't ya think? GymMember My BF was one of the victims. I'm glad they caught the scum. BTW, the gym he goes to (that's open 24 hours) didn't care when he told them what happened. Then a week later he caught a guy trying to get into lockers and he confronted him. The guy took off. When he told the guy at the front desk he was told "So? What do you want me to do about it?" outofshape Another reason not to go to the gym. CHARLIE My eyes grow weary and my mind very sad when I see these so young men starting out in a life of theft - What a terrible waste of themselves and to society; This is what happens when you don't have proper parenting, vocation and spiritual education - very sad indeed... Carol Hey Charlie, Open your eyes, these guys are probably long time criminals, we've had 12 year olds, bused into my school, breaking and entering neighborhood homes, not to mention stealing everything that is not nailed down. They are just keeping up the family tradition. Re: Gym Member Wow...24 hour fitness..if this is true that's some way to treat your customers...word of mouth is the best advertising..good or bad...anybody from 24 wanna rebuke? Wanted Posters If their out of jail, maybe they will be back to to the gym doing their skit. The gyms should post Wanted type posters with their photo advising members to be on the lookout for these thieves. dds @outofshape Exactly! Gyms are scary places with persistent sweaty/wet odors and filled with people either working through they "cycle", trying to pick up on the same/opposite sex, or, in this case, stealing from you! Spike Same thing happened to me at 24 hour fitness on Bellflower Blvd. I had my locker broken into and my money and money clip stolen and when I tried to report it (to the manager), they weren't interested and said the same thing..... so, what do you want me to do about it. I suggested a police report and they said they would look into it. Nothing happened.
