UPDATE Monday, June 6, 10:01am | Editor's note: This update is written by Managing Editor Allison Jean Eaton.

A Long Beach teen was sentenced to nearly 18 years in prison last week in connection with a drag racing accident on the Peninsula that killed four people last year.

Denis Alberto Reyes, 18, received his sentence on Wednesday, June 1, after pleading no contest to four counts of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated,

one count of auto theft and one count of hit-and-run causing death
.

Reyes was 17 in August 2010 when the stolen 1997 Ford Taurus he was racing down Ocean Boulevard collided with the 2003 Ford Mustang he was racing near the intersection of Ocean and 55th Place just after midnight on Aug. 22, 2010.

The Mustang spun out of control and slammed into the Peninsula's stone welcome sign, causing two of the vehcicle's three passengers and the driver to be ejected. Candice Bustamonte, 32, a mother of five, Delsya Castro, 16, and driver Jesus Heredia Calixto, 18, all died  at the scene.

The third passenger, 19-year-old Javier Marquez Jr., died the following day due to his injuries.

Reyes and his passenger, 18-year-old Daniel Estrada, fled the scene and were later apprehended by police.

UPDATE 10:00am Tuesday | The two males in the stolen green Ford Taurus that fled from the scene of the crash will likely face charges of manslaughter and murder among others, according to the Press-Telegram today. A 17-year old juvenile was driving the car, and police originally thought that the passenger was a juvenile, but is actually an 18-year old adult.  From reporter Kelly Puente:
Daniel Estrada, 18, is expected to be charged with vehicular manslaughter, vehicle theft and felony hit and run, said Long Beach Police Department spokeswoman Lisa Massacani.

The driver, a 17-year-old whose name was not released, is expected to be charged with murder, vehicle theft and felony hit and run.

UPDATE 9:30am Monday | The Press-Telegram today reports that the names of two of the three people killed in the crash have been released. The driver of the Mustang was 18-year old Jesus Heredia Calixto and his passenger was 32-year old Candice Ann Bustamante. Another passenger has still not been identified.

One other unidentified passenger was ejected from the vehicle but survived and remains in critical condition in a Long Beach hospital. Two 17-year old boys who were driving the stolen Ford Taurus fled the scene, but are in Police custody. The driver was unlicensed. The Press-Telegram story by Kelly Puente paints a grisly portrait of the aftermath, and reports that many Peninsula residents hear cars street racing down Ocean Boulevard quite often [PT].

UPDATE 2:30pm Sunday | A statement from the Long Beach Police Department has confirmed details that were earlier reported by the Los Angeles Times, mainly that all six people involved in the accident were Long Beach residents, that the green Ford Taurus pictured here was stolen, and that the two 17-year old occupants of the Taurus were uninjured, fled the scene and are now in Police custody.

In the black Ford Mustang that collided with the Taurus and slammed into the iconic Peninsula marker sign, the 18-year old driver was killed as were two of the three people ejected from the car on impact. The one survivor was ejected and remains in critical condition. The deceased include an unidentified female, a 32-year old female and the 18-year old male driver. The victim in critical condition is 19 years old.

There have been no indications as to whether or not alcohol was involved in the incident.

UPDATE 11:35am | The Los Angeles Times is now reporting that the two cars involved in last night's deadly accident were street racing when the black Ford Mustang and green Ford Taurus pictured in this article collided, that the Taurus was stolen, that the driver of that car was unlicensed, that both 17-year old Long Beach residents who fled that car were apprehended, and that all three of the deceased were Long Beach residents as well. 9:20am |
Three people were killed in a horrific car accident early Sunday morning when two cars veered off the road and slammed into a concrete sign. The incident occurred just after midnight on Sunday, according to the Long Beach Fire Department.

Two cars were involved in an apparently high-speed collision that caused severe damage and a tragic loss of life at the intersection of Ocean Boulevard and 55th Place, on the upscale Peninsula region of south Long Beach.

In one car, firefighters found that three people had been ejected from the vehicle after it collided with a concrete sign. Two of the ejected victims and one still inside the car were determined dead on the scene. One of those ejected victims was found in severe condition and quickly transported to a local hospital.

Witnesses said that two people that were inside the other vehicle fled the scene. The Fire Department says that one of them may have been apprehended by Police but there is no official word from the proper authorities yet.

More information to come...

what terrible news to wake up to. i feel so sorry for the families

Enuf!
Now tell me this wasn't alcohol related. The Shore is just a war zone these days.

JR Salazar
Ouch.

jkr
who wrote this article? could it be more confusing? 3 people were ejected..one was still in the car. 3 were determined dead on site, but one of them was in 'severe" condition and rushed to the hospital? sad news made sadder by poor writing. does anyone re-read before publishing?

Ryan ZumMallen, Editor
Hello jkr. I wrote the article, sorry for any confusion. According to the Fire Department, three people were ejected, two of which were killed and the other was taken to a hospital. One person remained in the same vehicle, and that person has also died. Thanks for reading and commenting.

Jeremy Colonna
Congratulations, Enuf! Under the cloak of anonymity and with virtually no supporting data, you have used the tragic deaths of three people to try and push your anti-business agenda in Belmont Shore. No wonder you don't put your real name on your posts. If there is evidence supporting your conclusion, then maybe it would be a good point for more community involvement in regulation of the local bar/restaurant/entertainment venues, but at least wait for the facts to come out before selfishly and tastelessly pushing your own transparent motives. Since we don't know the identity of the victims yet, I have a terrible feeling that they may be minors. Not that their age will soften the blow, in any way, for their families, but that would add another horrendous element to this already truly terrible incident. Let's all just say a prayer for their loved ones and have the common decency to not try and use their deaths to pursue our own aims!

Capster
lol - I'd have had to have consumed a lot of alcohol to find Ryan's writing confusing...but I wouldn't have been driving a vehicle. Healing thoughts to all involved...

Sika
jkr...I get what you mean, but I think that it was written correctly and there were actually four people. Three were ejected, and one went to the hospital (i.e. didn't die) and a fourth person died in the car.

Angi Carelli
They passed my home on the bluff, Ocean/Redondo, going quite fast, around midnight. I thought they were being chased, but realized they may have just been coming from the day's event downtown -- about four cars total were speeding, the black Mustang included. I worried for their high speeds and worried they wouldn't slow down prior to the pedestrians in Belmont Shore; looks like they went a different way. Very sad. Not long after watching them race by, I heard the sirens, then more, then even more. Too sad.

JC
Jeremy, 2nd St is a warzone after 12am thurs-sat. And you sound like Gene Rotundo with that "anti-business" nonsense.

Mike Ruehle
Jeremy Colonna, why do you think you are the only one who has the right to comment on an incident or the potential cause? How do YOU know the individuals were minors? Or is that just your opinion just like anyone elses? Could it be you have this opinion because YOUR family owns a significant portion of alcohol establishments in Belmont Shore and YOUR family prospers from those sales? Everytime there is an alcohol related incident in our community, you are the first one to jump up and shout loudly that everyone is drawing conclusions before the facts are in. However, when the facts come in, you are strangely silent. Three new alcohol licenses are being approved in Belmont Shore. That will bring the total to nearly 60 alcohol licenses in Belmont Shore alone, not counting the 14 alcohol licenses in Naples. It's your right to keep defending the detriment and loss of property values your business tenants cause our community. It's my right to call you on it. By the way, I have no problem using my real name.

abraham
why must Colonna ty to capitalize on this tragic incident for his own personal gains?? some things never change.

Jeremy Colonna
JC, I have lived and worked in and around Belmont Shore my entire life. The fact of the matter is that the restaurants and bars have been there long before my arrival and will be there long after my departure. If I was bothered by late night revelry, I wouldn't move into an area noted for its nightlife. If I didn't like airplane noise, I wouldn't purchase a home near an airport. If I was unable to swim, I wouldn't live on a house boat. While I don't dispute the fact that the Shore gets rowdy Thursday through Saturday, I hardly think it's a recent development. My resal estate office is one door off 2nd, and is occasionally subject to some of the less than desirable elements associated with the nightlife. To quote Superchicken, "I knew the job was dangerous when I took it!" If you're unhappy with your current CHOICE of location, then you have the luxury of moving. Don't blame Gene for your lack of due diligence prior to SELECTING your residence. Regardless, the facts support an entirely different conclusion to the one that was drawn by the previous poster. Neither of the drivers was of age, and apparently came from downtown. Sorry to disappoint you...no victim exploitation for you this Sunday :-(! Maybe you'll get lucky and something terrible will happen to someone else for you to push your agenda!

Jeremy Colonna
Mike: You just have a single source of news? You think that I didn't learn of the ages of the drivers before posting? Look around, news is out there.

Jeremy Colonna
Mike: My family owns buildings on 2nd Street and not businesses, aside from our family real estate office. The "alcohol establishments" that occupy our buildings serve only beer and wine. Please get your facts in order, prior to making any kind of accusations. If you doubt me, it's all public record.

Jeremy Colonna
In regards to my defense of alcohol related incidents on 2nd Street, what part of this downtown underaged street racing incident was I defending? I'm curious, of Buona Gente, Caffe La Strada, Thai Gourmet, Quinn's or Open Sesame, which one's are negatively impacting your property value?

Fedup
Some time ago the Grunion published a letter from a resident complaining about people driving too fast on the peninsula. I think the response was you're narcing on your neighbors. It's sad that people had to die for something preventable.

Captain Falcon
Too bad! You lost your machine!

Sandolla
I am also reading more than one source for this story, as I am a Belmont Shore resident, and a parent of a soon-to-be sixteen year-old, who may start driving soon. I have yet to read that 'both drivers' were under age. This articles says the driver and passenger of the Taurus, who fled the scene, were both seventeen. I have yet to read anything about alcohol involvement. No doubt alcohol at any age will impare driving, but unlicensed or youth and inexperience may have been a bigger contribution to this deadly crash. The pictures in this article are the most explicit I have seen, and I plan on making my son take a look at all the articles and pictures I find.

KE
Thurs-Sat isn't a warzone, the police just choose to make it look like one, so the residents that complain about the drunks feel like something is being done. But it's really an overreaction on everyones part and so many people are being arrested for jay walking. They bring out 4 police cars for a single jay walker. Pretty rediculous to bring up the "war" when this car accident had nothing to do with it.

Mike Ruehle
Jeremy, why be a hypocrite? Are you saying that you did not support your business tenants applying for FULL liquor licenses? How about the attemped conversion of Vints to a sports bar. Are you saying you did not support Vints, your tenant, and would not have prospered from it? Everyone knows getting that changes to Vints alcohol license conditions would have allowed you to jack up Vint's rent just like the other despicable commercial property owners who could care less they are destroying our community. Jeremy, you are just another one of those guys who lives on the peninsula who has no problem destroying other communities as long as you are not personally impacted in your own bubble kingdom protected on three sides by water. Not everyone else in the world can afford to live on the peninsula like you. I suspect you are aware that I and others in my community have the legal right to free enjoyment of my property without having to tolerate urination, fights, crime and public disturbances in our front yards caused by the clients of the establishments you vigorously defend. In my opinion, you are just like Gene Rotondo, another business owners who lives outside Belmont Shore and has no problem telling residents to leave if they don't like it. Comments such as yours deserve to detrimentally impact your Belmont Shore real estate business that derives from our community. In case you didn't realize, it was this type of Colonna attitude that caused your father to be defeated in his attempt to be Mayor. Residents don't wish to be represented by bubble kingdom people who care little for others.

Jeremy Colonna
Mike and JC: Just a note to make sure that you two know that I am not a bad guy. If either of those two underaged drivers were served alcohol at one of the 2nd Street bars, I will both publicly apologize to both of you and personally pay for the next BSRA meeting to be catered by one of our fine Belmont Shore restaurants. While I am not so naive as to think that it can be completely eradicated, I really hope that the atmosphere in the Shore hasn't degenerated to the point where minors are routinely served on 2nd. I firmly believe that a harmonious and cooperative relationship between the BSRA and the BSBA is essential for the health and continued prosperity of our great community. If I came across as overly gruff, I'm sorry. I was one of those Peninsula residents that wasn't allowed back into my home until almost 3:00 this morning, and came home to both a grouchy babysitter and wide awake toddler!

Jeremy Colonna
Mike: Vin't put a TV up in their bar area and you used that to wrongly stir up the idea that they were going to convert to a sports bar. That's just believing your own lies! Webster's defines hypocrite as: â€'noun 1. a person who pretends to have virtues, moral or religious beliefs, principles, etc., that he or she does not actually possess, esp. a person whose actions belie stated beliefs. 2. a person who feigns some desirable or publicly approved attitude, esp. one whose private life, opinions, or statements belie his or her public statements. You got a DUI in Belmont Shore after drinking in Naples! You were pulled over on 2nd Street for DRIVING DRUNK in Belmont Shore! 'Nuff Said!!!

JC
Apparently Jeremy C. has a very simple view of the world Is it true - ignorance is bliss? I'm jealous.

shoregirl
All late night revelry is not created equal. I do think that some of it crosses the line and to say to get up and move is being very flippant. Why can't there be an effort on the businesses and residents part to work together to bring about an environment that works for both?

Jeremy Colonna
JC...no name posted yet?

Shadow
Wow that's crazy I live in the 65st. I hread a big bang and then the ambulance. I went running like round 9:00 pm that some night wow Teens know in days. I feel so sorry for the families...

Jeremy Colonna
shoregirl: Please reference the comment I posted earlier. The constant sniping between the business and residential communities within Belmont Shore is going to continually get in the way of productive dialog. I think that if the BSBA appointed a liaison exclusively to try and address the legitimate concerns of the residents (and I do view them as legitimate! I just feel the methods by which they are brought forward are suspect); and the BSRA were to do likewise we would be far better off. A 2nd Street full of nothing but knicknack shops and clothing stores won't support itself, thereby further lowering property values. Neither will a shabby and unmaintained residential neighborhood support a well run desirable business district. You're right! The communities need to work together. Right now, the businesses complain about "those crazy residents", and the residents complain about "those irresponsible business owners". Realistically until both sides start generating productive and reasonable ideas about how to help address the issues on the other side, nothing will get accomplished and Mike and I will keep lobbing verbal barbs back and forth without end. Hopefully, he doesn't take it personally. While I don't necessarily agree with the way he goes about presenting his points, I respect both his tenacity and intelligence. I don't appreciate that he takes things to a personal level, but I tend to do the same thing when the point I am trying to defend is less salient than that of my opposite.

Really good points made in these comments. Putting aside our right to chose where we live, the businesses we patron, own or otherwise support, the reality of underage drinking and the conflict between businesses and residents what I take from this incident is the stark truth about out society. A more broad statement that the actions of street racers (in this case) make when they chose to show off. It's a total lack of respect for others. These people (kids or not) did not take even a moment to really consider the permanent consiquences of their actions. That's what is truly sad. As a peninsula resident, speeding up and down Ocean is a problem. I use to scoff at the idea of speed bumps but perhaps one of the two lanes having speed bumps (one going each direction) isn't such a bad idea. Thus eliminating side-by-side racing. Sort of a band-aid on the problem when the most effective way to fix a lot of LB's social problems is respecting eachother. PS Jeremy, you could have parked before the peninsula starts and walked home as my boufriend had to do coming home from a 16 hour work day.

Jeremy Colonna
Tracey: I actually did, but while they were still searching for the suspects, they wouldn't even let us do that! My sister ended up being able to get by shortly after the accident, but we tried to stay at our fundraiser later in the hopes we could get back home. Bad move! We got there and waited in the lot at the end of 54th Place until the boys in blue gave us the green light to even walk home! I know they were just doing their jobs and make sure that possibly dangerous car thieves weren't going to harm my wife and me in any way, but it sure is tough to keep that in mind that late/early :-)

ss
It is sad to see grown men air out dirty laundry below such horrific photos. Take it somewhere else.

beachgirl71
It's odd to me that in lieu of the tragedy, everyone's talking about Belmont Shore as it relates to the sale of alcohol. How about addressing the use of Ocean as a drag strip? I see the police on occasional mornings around 9am and even in the afternoon. It seems like we need strong police presence in the late nights on the weekends. Cripes! I hear people flying down the peninsula in the middle of the day and it's really terrifying. Doesn't anyone give a damn about the people that live down here? I'm waiting for someone to come out and say that the stone monument killed the drivers and a recently formed commission (created with thousands of our tax dollars) insists that it be replaced with a rubber sign so it never kills again. And may I add, that when all those awful candles and flowers and crosses are placed at the entrance to the P, they're removed in a timely fashion. Please don't misunderstand. I completely feel sick about this and walked down to the crime tape early this morning after the crash and sirens. I couldn't believe my eyes. BUT, I don't care to be faced with the memorial litter that will inevitably follow. Those of us that live here shouldn't have to be reminded of this tragedy anymore with litter symbolism because of some kids that decided use our neighborhood as a racing strip.

BJF
You people are disgusting. There was a horrific traffic collision, and the comment section has been taken over by talk of war zones, alcohol licensing and name calling? Shame on all of you for taking this tragedy as a political soapbox. Every time something "shore" related comes up, I see the same names & people commenting about how bad things have become. I agree with Mr. Colonna - those who complain about airport noise shouldn't have moved next to the airport. And so on. The impression I get from the online community is that the businesses should vacate immediately, and the entire community should be gated and guarded by armed security. Keep the riffraff out. Wrong forum & Wrong time.

sally
what a tragic event. my thoughts are with the families and anyone who had to witness the aftermath. my thoughts are also with that sweetheart jeremy colonna who pushes the airport theory in regards to belmont shore. most of my neighbors in BS have lived here for over 20 years, if not much much longer. i dont see how the airport theory applies here. most of us moved here before the bars exploded. i suppose we should all move? i have this thing called the life theory. its about how life isnt about making money off indulgence but making relationships with your community. you should stop putting people down for complaining about people urinating/defecating/fighting/shouting in front of our homes.

RACER
The Pennisula: A perfect "drag Strip"..... and there are many others in Long Beach... they (racers) use El Dorado Park Estates frequently... FORTUNATELY, no deaths or severe damage. Basketball free-standing poles have prevented the driver from going any further into the driveway "GARAGE." The "Fake Rock which covers the in ground cables prevented the driver from getting quickly away...multiple cars being side swiped and numerous skid marks in the neighborhood streets..... The story is about STREET RACING... will your street be next??!!! Death...due to the driver and the passengers own CHOICE!! Yes, sorrow to the families/friends... but, OH WELL!!

Belmont Bob
This accident was truly a tragedy, minors don't have to be served alcohol at an establishment to drink alcohol. We don't know yet if alcohol was involved or just inexperience at driving. Mr. Ruehle seems opposed to business on 2nd street and appearently does not like Mr. Colonna. Mr. Ruehle this is not an outlet for personality likes and dislikes. The mix on 2nd street is necessary to succeed. There was a time when the residents association and the business association worked closly together for the betterment of all, to bad those days can't return. Jeremy makes pretty good sence.

MuffinLB
In response to Jeremy Colonna. You are correct...if you buy in a place with an area with a lot of bars and nightlife you shouldn't complain. However, when I bought my home in The Shore Panama Joe's was a neighborhood restaurant with a bar that catered to overage barflys. These days it's Sharkeys (I don't care if the sign says Panama Joe's...it's Sharkeys) and Sharkeys caters to a lowlife crowd in every community they do business. Their ads are smutty and those in the queue are throwing around the f-bomb as I walk my young children pass to get an ice-cream cone at Rite-Aid. The house next door near the alley is, from what I understand, occupied by an older couple that moved in decades ago. Poor people...I was on a power walk the other night when a guy was vomiting in their front yard after stumbling out of Panama Joe's at 9pm. The AI looks like some bar pulled from the streets of Tijuana now that you can see its warts, guts and all with the removal of the wall. But Jeremy, I do appreciate you sharing your views because I'm guessing your dad shares them as well and should he (or you) decide to run again for office he just lost my vote. Cheap shot at Mike Ruehle, too. Hope you don't have any skeletons in your closet.

jc
Good one BJF! Calling "you people" disgusting for politicizing the board and then you go on a political rant in the same post. Brilliant!!! You have set a new, new low. **I agree with Mr. Colonna - those who complain about airport noise shouldn't have moved next to the airport. And so on. The impression I get from the online community is that the businesses should vacate immediately, and the entire community should be gated and guarded by armed security. Keep the riffraff out.**

Dixie
exactly what beachgirl said, this is a horrific accident and all you people care about is your licence and alcohol, that has nothing to do with this post, both of you are rude and selfish people. the ones who died should be respected not passed over by your own problems with each other, like always say got a problem deal with it, however here is not the place, so drop your high and mighty egos and get over yourself, not cool. what goes around comes around... peace be with there families and will be in my prayers<3

Jeremy Colonna
All: I would like to apologize. The whole reason for my initial post was to chastise another for politicizing this tragic event. Unfortunately, I was drawn into a discussion participating in doing just that. Families are put in a position of having to bury children and our community disputes shouldn't overshadow that. The only thing that Belmont Shore/Peninsula residents should be concentrating on is being thankful that our loved ones are safe, and making sure that we work together to do what we can to prevent this from happening in the future. I have shown insensitivity to people who have suffered a tremendous loss, and am very sorry.

lou
The poor parents. Regardless of how this tragedy happened, it did. Had it happened in North Long Beach, who's to say it would be magnified to the extent it has. People are dead, parents and families are suffering. All of our issues here in our little haven mean nothing compared to the suffering of a parent who's lost a child. It doesn't matter what your address is in this situation. Please remember to support your local firefighter/paramedic when it comes time to pay taxes. These heroes have to endure and witness this kind of stuff every day. We need to stand up for eachother, protect one another. Be grateful because we are all blessed and privileged to live in LBC. Good people are everywhere. I applaud all of our vocal civic leaders, and will defend their right to say their piece, regardless of which side their are on. It's people like you who speak out who are fearless patriots.

Ady
I found the writing of the article a bit confusing because the very top picture states "green Ford Taurus pictured here" .. anyhow, if they were stupid enough to be street racing, and/or driving drunk, better they are no longer in our gene pool and off our streets Once And For All. One less idiot driving a machine of death. If they were still alive, they could've run over your child or loved one next weekend =) Be thankful!

Enuf!
Well, it's about 7:50 PM and there is another dumb accident at 2nd and Granada that looks pretty needless. Geez!

ocean resident
In a week full of terrible new for my extended family, my heart is saddened further by this needless and ferocious loss. Though I have no children of my own, a loss of this magnitude will certainly destroy several families. As one rarely sees this kind of accident attributed to 55 year old speed racers, one hopes that every parents in our neighborhood will use this tragedy to illustrate the perils of risky behavior to thier kids. Living on Ocean we've seen, on a regular basis, accidents minor, major and horrific, and I wish it were different. Yet, I wouldn't live anywhere else. Blessings to the families who are suffering.

Heavy Heart
Does anyone know about the boy that was taken to the hospital?

Morgan M.
The real issue here is that this area is a flat 2 lane straight away with only ONE stop sign dividing the 18 or so blocks. The residents have been requesting speed bumps in at least one of the two lanes for years to deter this kind if behavior. This isn't the first death or injury on the peninsula due to reckless speeding. In most cases it a pedestrian, child, or a biker who is the victim. People race down this stretch all day and night. Unfortunately these losers don't care about their lives or the lives of the innocent people the kill. Hopefully the city will do something now to help make our neighborhood a safer place.

Yes, Jeremy, I use to race like that in my thrilling teen age years, and at onetime, lived in the Peninsula and raced in the waters there too. I have a suggestion - put speed bumps on that strech of road - it would solve the whole problem, just like they do on the finer streets of San Marino, Pasadena and Huntington Library, the residents love the peace and quite they generate - It seems that speed bumps on the rears of these teen agers - don't work anymore.:>)

Mark
This is a tragic event for everyone but lets not overreact and start reinventing our world. I heard the crash and was quite surprised. I always hear cars and cyclists going by but rarely are there collisions much less accidents of this severity. This town, 2nd street and especially the peninsula are so damn cool and the reason for it is because of the people who come here and make it what it is. It will never be perfect but it is great the way it is.

Speaking of Airplanes
Yes I moved from BS directly under the flight path in Inglewood. Not many drinking establishments in my neighborhood, but I am sure that if a jet were to ever come down into into it, the people here would not file postings trying to find blame. They would be in mourning. Transition in life are inevitable, it is up to each one of us to see them as opportunities to build unity, be it in the beginning of life or the end as we know it. All One Spirit is with all of us so lets be open to being in our hearts and come from Love. I may be in Inglewood but I love Long Beach. Peace and Blessings to all.

Christine Beaur-Mortezaie
This was a horrible accident. What a tragedy for the teens families and friends. Let's get the city to find ways to minimize these accidents. I agree with Charlie and think that speed bumps could be a deterrent. I am on 3rd and speed thrills go on there just in between stop signs! One driver flew through a fire hydrant across the street then landed up right at my front door! I must say that for some reasons I always felt uncomfortable with the intersection of 7th St and Park. Cars are flying through as kids drink coffees, eat ice creams, or just do their homework completely oblivious of what is around them. They are practically sitting in the street! Let's shelter them with some big heavy planters or other appropriate devices that can provide proctection.

Beachgirl71
Glad the board's calmed down a bit. This is again, tragic and sad- good god, how can this really happen? Upon coming home tonight, there was the last news van wrapping up its photos of the candles lit in front of the killer monument. I resent this coming down to a news photo op.

kandace Rocha
my cuzzin Candace was the 32 year old who was found dead at the scean i have never met her but i feel bad for my aunt!! i will miss my cuzzin dearley! RIP. Candace!! and there was probablly not alchola involved cause for 1 i cant see my cuzzin drinking. please pray for my family!

iconz
These kids made a choice and now they're dead, injured, or facing jail time. At least there were no innocent victims involved, like a family in a crosswalk.

ss
Wow, a "littered memorial", " resenting a photo op". The littered memorial was not even up for 24 hours. And it was not a photo op, it was just tragic news. I feel sorry for the unsolicited citizens and civil servants who's mind must be "littered" with horrible haunting images from the scene and you are worried about candles in front of a sign? I truly hope that the news coverage and what little time the precious sign was covered with a sea( maybe a dozen) of candles at least made people think and initiate a conversation with their kids/family members of ALL socio-economic backgrounds about the dangers of speeding and racing in ANY neighborhood. That conversation/seed may save a life or two down the line. Please note that the racing cars NEVER made it into the Peninsula. Where did they build up so much speed? Well, that would be in front our house on Ocean. We see young kids race by, grey haired men in luxury sports cars come speeding by and mom's in SUVs on their cell phones speeding by. We need to come together from both sides of the Peninsula sign and work with our city and police about slowing cars down on Ocean Blvd from the Belmont pool to the jetty. My sincere condolences to the families and friends of the departed.

You play / You pay. I'm just happy to hear no innocents were hurt here.Throw the book at the two who ran.

I feel for the families but "IF" the report is correct, then, they stole a car, they raced, and they died while committing a crime.

Racing on Ocean Blvd./the Peninsula is a long-standing problem. Drinking on second street is a totally unrelated issue/problem. The restaurants aren't the problem. But I do know that bars are serving liquor to patrons who are already over the legal limit. This creates problems for the neighborhood and City. As for the racing on Ocean, the police do not seem to be able to stop it. The righthand lane coming onto the Peninsula narrows unreasonably if there is a car parked at the south curb. The red curb should probably extend further east on this curb. At 25 mph the narrowing is hard to negotiate in a compact car. That anomaly as well as the speed of the cars may have contributed to the cause of this horrible accident.

In reference to shoregirl's comment....Sadly enough there was a wonderful working relationship for years between the businesses (BSBA) and the residents (BSRA)when Jeanette Gavin was president of the BSRA. She was elected president during a time of great dissension between the two organizations. Jeanette worked very hard to bring the two together and co-exist in harmony and it was indeed very harmonious for the eight years of her tenure. Unfortunately, that all came to an end when Mike Ruehle became president of the BSRA and we were right back where we were 8 years previous! Fortunately, he is no longer in the position. It will take years to undo what Mike has done but hopefully, one day, we will get there again.

People commenting that Peninsula residents have resisted putting in speed bumps to deter racing are ignorant of the facts: the fire department will not allow speed bumps because it slows their response time to the end of the Peninsula. The residents have actually requested speed tables in the right-hand lanes, coming and going, and there is currently a pilot program in the works. Lots of inaccurate and uninformed name-calling going on. Rents on the Peninsula are various and many are exactly equivilent to other parts of the city.

Jillian Chandler
correction on my redundancy...should be coexist or exist in harmony. I was all fired up!!

!
omg! you guys are so ignorant saying "oh thank god there not 0n our streets anymore" wtf are you talking about these people that died had family, and friend that are noow trying to cope with there loss and you guys are here talking smack. You guys dont even know them what if it was your family member or friend? im sure you would feel different. It was a mistake like anyone one of us makes they just lost there lives. We should all learn from this instead of being so ignorant. And to clear s*** up the people that lost there lives aren't the ones who stole the car.

beachgirl71
ss- with all due respect, I was commenting on the fact that all this candle lighting simply comes down to symbolism. Lighting candles may make some feel as if they've contributed and they may feel better for having done it, but it does nothing to comfort people who have lost or help the situation. In a day- it's simply litter. Those of us who live in this neighborhood don't need to be reminded of this tragedy and the families of those killed won't find comfort in a bunch of candles and dried out flowers. No one wants to remove it for fear of hurting someone's feelings and so it sits there. And sits there. Quite frankly, a real gesture of love and caring would be for the crash scene to be video taped and shown at the local high schools to remind the kids of what not to do on the weekend. Or parents could put unlit candles in their kids' cars on Friday and Saturday nights...as subtle as a brick though a window, but a reminder, nevertheless. News trucks filming people lighting candles and singing Kumbya may fill a slow news night, but it has no real meaning. Do you think they really care about these kids or are they just filling a slow news night? The bodies are lying in some morgue and people are out there lighting candles in a flash and being quoted on TV. Kids standing behind people speaking to the newsman waving and trying to get on camera...how exciting for us!!! "Mom, look! I'm on TV!!!" Seriously...it's disgusting. Let's remember the families that have lost their loved ones with some dignity. I'm sorry if you think I'm harsh, but I'm being honest here.

Jillian Chandler
!....Yes, this was a horrible tragedy!! (And correct, the car thieves were the ones that survived.) Sometimes we forget that we were once young, irrresponsible and seemingly invincible. Everyone makes some awful choices in life and unfortunately these people had to pay for their very bad choices with their lives. Very sad for their families.

CalGirl
This is a horrible tragedy. One bad decision ended three lives and ruined many others. Compassion is required and "the rock that killed" should be permanently removed!

Amy
These morons are total rank amateurs who have no business street racing. I've dragraced this part of Ocean in the past but you need to be well aware that most of the elderly residents in this part of town drive VERY slow and can cause a wreck. Always start at the peninsula sign and face toward Bayshore. Street racing can be fun and safe but you need to know what you are doing.

beachgirl71
Yes, Calgirl, the rock jumped out in the middle of the road and killed them. It should be replaced by a rubber monument, right? Are you kidding me? The kids racing killed themselves. To be honest, I'm not a big fan of the monument, but now I have to defend it. And anyway, it's barely scratched.

beachgirl71
Thanks for the tip Amy- REALLY HELPFUL here!

JC
Hi Jillian - just wondering what planet you are posting from? Jeanette Gavin worked very closely with Gene Rotundo / BSBA because she had aspirations to be the 3rd district councilperson. She would actually show up at city council meetings and speak on behalf of bar owners and in the process call concerned residents "liars". The only way to "get along" with the BSBA is to agree with Gene. If you challenge his plans to turn 2nd St into bar row (see the great new look at the AI) then he calls you "anti-business". How's that for harmony?

Grumpy Guy
Wow, the Fire Dept. is against speed bumps b'cuz it will slow there response?!?! To what, a 2-car crash that didn't happen? As many people in the building industries know, the fire dept. has too much power. They need to step back and stick to putting out fires instead of regulating everything the care to.

Grumpy Guy
Also, the Shore IS SO a war zone Th-Sun! I have lived here since '98 and currently right behind one of the bars on 2nd St. I have no problem with people partying here (I did enough of it) But allowing the drunks to scream, yell, blast car stereos and fight after the bars close is wrong and IS detrimental to RE values. My landlord will find that out when I move out at the end of this lease. Why won't the bar owners post thier bouncers in the parking lots after closing to shoo away the drunks? And why won't the cops respond to calls? It's just a wild free-for-all down here Th-Sun. A couple weekends ago I broke my rule (cuz of possible retribution)and went outside to yell at a carload of drunks partying smack in front of my front door. They had woken me at 3AM and were yelling, cranking the stereo and even blowing the horn... on a residential street! They told me to move if I didn't like it. Unfortunatly that's about all I can do.

Ryan P
I have been living in Belmont Shore for almost two years now. To call it a "war zone" after midnight is ridiculous! I have never lived in a more peaceful or quiet neighborhood in my entire life. Granted, I am closer to Ocean than 2nd, but I have never had one night where I was kept up by young college kids. I have gotten home at 1 or 2 in the morning before and I have never seen rowdy drunk people. Sure, there are quite a few people over the limit, but it's not like they are running around all of Belmont Shore. The business on 2nd street are a great ssset to this community.

Jillian Chandler
JC...whoever you are. That would be planet earth. And, I don't recall EVER seeing Jeanette Gavin on the ticket for councilperson. Did I miss that election?

Grumpy Guy
@Ryan P, That's why it's called "Division St." On your side it's the refreshing smell of sea air wafting through the windows, on my side it's the malifourous odor of rancid puke on your doorstep!

ac
The Peninsula Rock exists, not just because it’s a pretty ornament, but in reality, because the residents out here had been trying for years to figure out a way to project the message: "this is our neighborhood, please respect it". The discussion ranged everywhere from gating the street (not a legal option), installing cameras, installing a “guard house”, and even hiring a guard to monitor the traffic â€' kind of like a K-Mart Greeter. The message was specifically aimed at the racers and the low-lifes who deal drugs in the park at the end of the peninsula, and who are often one and the same. The Rock was finally chosen as a “subtle” message. If it is The Peninsula Rock that stopped the speeding Mustang, then maybe the message has now been sent loud and clear, thanks to the media coverage and the horrific-ness of the accident. Sad, but true. I agree with Beachgirl71. The Peninsula Rock stays!

ac
People, this is not the place to debate the BSBA vs. BSRA issues. Take it somewhere else and show some respect for the tragedy that THIS story is. Geeesh!

beachgirl71
Exactly, ac. The rock's shape is repetitive of the shape of the P. If they hadn't hit it, they would have hit a tree, another car or a home. Sad but true.

Ryan P
@ GRUMPY GUY: Haha! That is a good one! I knew it had to be called Division St. for a reason!

Rich
OK...enough about alcohol which may or may not have been purchased or consumed in the Shore. Curious minds (not "Politically Correct" liberal tree hugger minds) want to know. Jesus Heredia Calixto was unlicensed...was he also illegal? Just want to know since so many illegals are law breakers (actually their just being on US soil IS a crime). I'm sure most are afraid to inquire and be called names by liberals. It should be part of the police investigation and disclosed.

Mike Ruehle
Along with Jillian Chandler, Jennette Gavin was a long time Belmont Shore Residents Association (BSRA) boardmember who was voted OUT of office in 2008 because she repeatedly voted for issues that favored Belmont Shore businesses over residents. Both Jillian and Jeanette received less than 25% of the vote in 2008 and were replaced by resident friendly boardmembers. Soon afterwards, Councilman DeLong then appointed Jeannette Gavin to be the Belmont Shore residents representative to the Parking Commission. In 2009, following numerous anti-resident votes while ACTING as a commissioner, a residents survey was circulated and an official request was made to the Mayor to have Jeanette Gavin removed as the Belmont Shore resident representative Commissioner. Ms. Gavin resigned shortly afterwards. The Mayor and Council have since refused to reappoint a replacement because they do not want anyone on the Parking Commission (has little to do with parking) who is friendly to resident causes. Jillian, get your facts straight. The only reason things deteriated between the BSRA and BSBA after I became BSRA president is because, unlike other BSRA leaders, I stood up for residents seeking my help and refused to accept a bribe from Business Association president.

Reading through these comments and agree, we need to make our beach safer and work on solutions to slow the traffic down on Ocean Blvd. The 4 cars did come down Ocean from downtown, as they told me they left fast food place, not in one of the cars that crashed and wanted to go to the beach. I am the 1st to say we need to keep our beach's closed at 10:00. I wanted to comment on the the family and friends who lost loved ones. They have been very respectful our Peninsula and Granite marker. The family have taken the candles and flowers home at night and bringing back candles in the morning. So please be a little nicer and friendlier as we all are from Long Beach and many of made the same sort of mistakes but were just lucky.

Beachboy
Beachgirl71, I am ashamed that you are my neighbor - that you are so troubled by some candles and flowers just a day after this tragedy that you want them removed. There was a mother of five children, and a 16-year-old girl, who were innocent victims of this stupid teenage driver. If it gives their families and loved ones some small comfort to have a few candles and flowers at the rock for a few days, you think they're "awful" reminders and you (or your ilk) take them down and throw them out as litter. You can't even stand them for a few days. Sorry if I've offended you, but I just can't comprehend what kind of callous, cold-hearted, self-centered non-human being could say what you've said.

Island Resident
I too am ashamed of Beachgirl71's comments and that she can actual call herself human. I don't understand how you can look at candles and flowers as litter. You are right, they are reminders of this horrible tragedy, but reminders that bring comfort to the family and friends of the victims. If it was your child in that accident, you probably wouldn't even leave the site much less want all reminders to disappear! At least not until your child was buried. A couple of days of memorialization doesn't hurt anyone. Get off your high horse and have some compassion for the other human beings on this planet. You should be ashamed of yourself. I am ashamed of you. I actually went over there today to place more candles out there so that the families did not think that the residents here are so selfish and callous to take down the memorial. I want them to know that there are people who care and that are saddened for their loss.

ss
Ruehle-take BS form the BSRA & the BSBA elsewhere. Where is your grace and dignity here?

Concerned Citizen
How many were registered gang members and how many were in the country illegally? Why is it that the press in California do not identify perps as being illegal aliens? Report all of the story if you could please. It is just fortunate that they didn't kill anyone on the sidewalk.

CalGIrl
Kudos to Beachboy and Island Resident for calling out beachgirl71 and her lack of compassion. A very large percentage of the Peninsula residents strongly dislike the rock which is more appropriate for a mountain setting. That is why is has been nicknamed the "rock that killed." Beachgirl71 is an idiot to think I implied that it jumped into the street and killed innocent people. Idiot with lack of compassion ... nice combination!

seriously
we will never REALLy know what happened...if in fact they were racing or if the Taurus was just trying to race them and hit them..look at the damage.... MY FAMILY MEMBER died in this accident...HOW ABOUT INSTEAD OF ALL THIS THAT IM READING...U ALL PUT ALL THE FAMILIES IN UR PRAYERS...SERIOUSLY!....

Defend99
The passenger will eventually face few charges if any at all as defense atty will get him off. The driver will be fully charged but unfortunately will face a minimum jail sentence as jurys will not allow extensive jail time for anyone his age. Unfortunate but reality.

iconz
I don't find Beachgirl71's posts offensive. She's not really saying that the memorials are "litter," but that the memorials are temporary and too soon forgotten (like Wilson High School student Melody Ross' memorial on Ximeno). The family members and community would be best served by addressing the issue of unsafe driving at high schools and other teen venues.

Tracey90803
*Speed tables on outside lanes would still allow for the fire/police to go down the inside lane at a higher rate of speed. HOWEVER this would push cyclists and skateboarders to the inside lane to avoid the speed tables which would (quite frankly) piss me off. *The peninsula neighborhood marker is totally innocent. It is in the center divider...where cars aren't supposed to be! No one has mentioned the green utility company box that was ripped from it's foundation 20 feet behind the marker where the Taurus hit. We should remove the box, rock and all the trees as they are obviously in the way of cars! See how silly that sounds? *So maybe the passengers of the 'stang are the innocent ones, maybe they protested the driver's decision to race but could do nothing about it. The drivers of both cars and the passenger of the Taurus are responsible. Especially the jerk-off kids who fled. Stolen car, no license and street racing in a neighborhood? *The flower memorials-just like funerals are for the living, the memorials are for the living. They appear at night and one of my neighbors (I assume) takes it all down by the morning. Leaving items on public property is littering. I'm not saying that the intent behind the gesture is wrong...the people who are leaving candles and flowers etc are just trying to make themselves feel better. Yet technically, the people taking down the flowers and candles are doing community service. *To the families...I am sorry that your relatives chose poorly and you are left to suffer the consiquences. It's not fair.

beachgirl71
Thank you iconz for reading my entire post and not taking what I wrote out of context. I think that everyone is just overly emotional about this and that's understandable. It's just ironic to me that the 'really compassionate ones' are the name callers. If you had really read my posts objectively you'd get it. Thank you again iconz for reading the entire content. I'm sorry if I offended as that wasn't my intent. However, the opinion of my posts do not waiver.

beachgirl71
Cal Girl- In today's politically correct climate, everyone blames everything tragic that happens on inanimate objects- i.e. "Suv kills family of 4." I thought that was where you were coming from. My comment about the monument, which apparently you didn't read, is that its design is based on an aerial view of the peninsula- not an arrowhead. At least, as an artist, that's my take on it. Perhaps it should have been explained to the neighborhood. Look our little peninsula up on a map and your 'killer rock' may make more sense to you.

Island Resident
Beachgirl71...your comments were not taken out of context. You seem to be a bit focused on the littering aspect and connecting it to the 30 seconds of fame that some people want rather than their true meaning that Tracey90803 explains. The candles have nothing to do with the TV cameras...they are memorials for those left behind. Yes, they do make for a "great shot" for the news and yes, after the flowers die and a few days have passed, they may be considered litter, but not before. If you want to look at it that way that's your choice but the compassion lies in looking beyond the "law" and the "litter" and trying to do what we can to be sympathetic to these poor families and friends. Removing and treating the memorial like litter is stating that these human beings are not worthy of our respect. I bet if it was a car full of white teenagers coming home from a night of fun at a school dance that there would be even more flowers, stuffed animals, photos, etc and they would be left up for weeks. Unfortunately, this tragic event is the perfect example of sterotyping and it saddens me. They were teenagers who thought they were invincible as all teenagers do...they were not gang members or illegal immigrants...just kids doing stupid stuff. Yes, some of it was against the law but the "criminals" were not the ones who died and they will suffer for the rest of their lives. They killed their friends and must live with that. We need to have compassion for the families of those innocent kids who just made some bad choices, not judge them or disrespect them. We need to keep these people in our prayers and show others that the residents of 90803 have compassion and class...at least some of us do.

beachgirl71
Islandgirl- okay you're deeply compassionate and I'm heartless. You've beaten this to a pulp. Done.

Jack
There is one reason for this. Charming people have been using the Peninsula for decades as their playground -- from gangbanging in the park to intimidating residents to racing down Ocean. Apparently, the police have neither the resources nor inclination to establish a beat there, and the fire department has vetoed repeated appeals to put down speed bumps. One of the "victims" was a mother of five! What was she doing prowling about at midnight on a Saturday night? I can guess. Apparently she and her fellow passengers didn't have any use for seat belts at 100mph. The other car was driven by unlicensed car thieves, who showed what they're made of by fleeing the scene. This is about a neighborhood trying to have peace and quiet, but instead is subjected to constant invasions by lowlifes who know they can get away with their lawbreaking. To hear people weeping over these criminals is disgusting. (Remember, the driver who was killed also killed two of his passengers and would also have been charged with manslaughter had he survived.) None of this should elicit sympathy, but obviously it elicits the piety of those who would rather parade their "compassion" than deplore the depraved conduct that led to this ugly outcome. Finally, this had NOTHING to do with the Second Street bar scene or alcohol. These types are not part of it. They come to the straightaway to get street cred. Because they know no one will intervene. Well, for once, justice intervened.

ac
If you recall, Angels pitcher, Nick Adenhart and two friends were killed in similar spectacular and senseless late night accident in Fullerton last year. The Angels left his impromptu memorial in place for the whole season. I am sure the memorial helped in the healing process for his teammates, fans, friends and family. The Angels got that! No matter what personal decisions led to their deaths, the deceased in this tragedy left behind many people who mourn their passing. If we Peninsula residents can offer them some measure of comfort by enduring a memorial for a while, what’s the harm? We should also remember that there are Peninsula residents â€' witnesses â€' who were traumatized by the event and maybe they need some mourning and closure time as well. I see that someone has taken the time to clean up the debris around the Rock. We could go one step further and replant the area quickly. We can be outraged that it happened, but we don't have to be coldhearted to the mourners.

ac
Why do we need two lanes down the Peninsula to a dead end anyway?? Remove the drag strip and they won’t come to drag race. I’m pretty sure you can’t drag race in one lane. Simply turn the curb lane on both sides of Ocean into parallel parking and a bike lane. Problem solved! Plus we get more parking and more space for bikers to avoid cars pulling out of blind alleys. I know, I know, the City and the Coastal Commission have nixed the idea in the past ….but maybe now they will reconsider???

Bring It On
I think a cat fight between island girl and beach girl would settle their dispute.

100 comments so far on this story! Is that a record? It is good to see such passion, but at what cost? This story seems to have generated plenty of anger and frustration. A mere 38 days ago, there were plenty of smiling, happy people who gathered at the end of the Peninsula to hear the Emperors play some great classic rock music. Maybe a break from the heat, the bad news, the negativity of this past week could be forgotten, even if only for a few hours.....the band is playing a free concert Thursday (tomorrow) from 6:00-8:00 at Stearns Park in Long Beach. I hope that this 101st comment helps, and I thank Ryan ZumMallen and the LB Post for allowing all of us to express our feelings, whether they be negative or positive.

Most of the memorial has been taken down by the family and friends at night and returned in the morning (less candles that come much later at night). As for the police, gang enforcement has been watching the area all week. Also the police and marine patrol do respond to calls and keep a eye out for Peninsula residents. Marine patrol has only 2 suv's on duty and must watch 2 large marina's as well as the beach and they do a wonderful job, just take a look at their monthly stats. Bring back no overnight parking on Ocean, which would allow the police a reason to keep late night gatherings from happening. Also there are designs to add a median between 54th and 55th.

I'm 46, have a career, family and long term relationships in the community. On Thurs - Sun, I want to party in my home town and not be treated like a juvenile of criminal, I want to have a margarita on the beach and stroll 2nd street with a beer in my hand and my girl on my arm.

jc
Something doesn't smell right here. This kid gets charged with murder (not vehicular manslaughter) for drag racing and there have been gang units hanging out on the peninsula near the crash site all week. Me thinks there is more to this story.

sad
Sad about these people, but the late night street racing is very bad. It happens all of the time. I wonder if it has been determined how fast they were going?

Eagle Eye @ Jack
I concur completely.

Seeing these fake PC hand-wringers try to brow beat everyone about this "tragedy", is beyond ludicrous.

It doesn't matter if this was alcohol related or not. Every person on this earth knows the rules of the rode, especially that racing is illegal! No excuses will fix this. And the state continues to give permits and licenses to young teens. They can't even take care of themselves let alone drive a car and take responsibility for others! Granted, these accidents happen at any age, but the highest rate is among teens. The age limit should be raised to get a license, and there should be no permits to drive at all!

Anonymous
I feel sorry for the loss of the families involved. I overheard our neighbors coming home bragging about going 120+ on the roads this past Saturday. This needs to end before more lives are lost!

kathy ryan
Sixty alcohol licenses' in a small strip of the City is ridiculous! Mr. Colonna, there are people who live in Belmont Shore, who have owned their homes for years as there are throughout the City. I I lived in Bixby Knolls for 10 years. The planes flew directly over my home. When we moved to Bixby Knolls, there were only a few flights a day, but then the City decided to increase the flights to 40. We moved, because of the health risks to our children and the noise. If we all used your theory, then the Airport should have moved, because I was there first, as were many, many other families. I left a home, not a house, where there were lots of memories. Not everyone has the means to move! There are many in Belmont Shore, who moved into their neighborhood years ago, not bar row. I now live across the street from the old Bentleys. After it changed hands, it was one troublesome spot after another for a long time; and this was just one establishment. Neighborhoods make a City, not bars, and certainly not 60 of them. Bars also attract people who like racing through the streets, because they understand the atmosphere of Belmont Shore...that it is a party strip. Partying, drinking and driving recklessly go together. Look at the marijuana ordinance; it was all about tax revenues, not families! In the City of Long Beach, everything has a $ attached, and bars are profitable.
Since we now know your idea of what a City should look like, please don't run for the City Council.

Wow
32 years old and 5 kids? Jesus...

A 32-year old mother of five riding around at night with four teenagers. And her children were where?

This is very tragic for an entire family to do at the hands of individuals who are breaking the law. My heart grieves for the surviving loved ones of the victims. Hopefully someday their consciences will convict them of this tragedy and their hearts will be remorseful. As I close there should be some form of restitution to the victims surviving loved ones.

If I've got this straight he obviously committed crimes, but the driver of the other car chose to race also and then that driver lost control and killed his passengers. This kid is nothing more than a scapegoat. Am I missing something?
