Grand Marshals Named For Upcoming Long Beach Latin Parade by Ryan ZumMallen | Archive | 08.25.10 |
+ ![]() Photo of the 2009 parade by Christian Millan (full gallery here). 10:50am | Grand Marshals have been announced for the upcoming 2nd annual Latin American Parade & Festival, to be held in the streets of downtown Long Beach around 1:00pm on Saturday, September 25. Last year's inaugural event drew thousands of people who watched the parade and stuck around for live music and fun activities at the festival. Spanish singer Shaila Durcal will headline the parade as Celebrity Marshal. A pop idol from Spain and well known throughout Latin America, Durcal has released four albums including Recordando, her most popular. The parade's Grand Marshal will be Port of Long Beach Harbor Commissioner Mario Cordero, joined by Community Marshals Jessica Quintana of Centro CHA and former pro cyclist and Long Beach Bicycle Ambassador Tony Cruz, who shared his vision for the future of biking in Long Beach with the LBPOST.com in 2009 (click here for that article). “This is a great opportunity to recognize the incredible talent, enthusiasm and commitment of these Latino leaders,” said Councilmember Robert Garcia, who planned the event from conception last year. “I don’t think we could have chosen people more deserving of this honor.” Like last year, the parade will run down Pine Avenue from 6th Street to Broadway and conclude in the East Village Arts District with music, dancing and an arts festival. The day is being held with help from sponsor Downtown Long Beach Associates (DLBA). The public is invited to an open reception to honor the Parade Marshals on Wednesday, September 8 at Hotel Maya from 6:00-8:00pm. RSVP to Cory Allen at cory.allen@longbeach.gov if you plan to attend. SOCCERDAD SHAILA DURCAL? SHE ISNT EVEN LATIN!!! SHE IS SPANISH HELLO..... WE ARE SUPPOSED TO BE CELEBRATING LATIN AMERICA'S INDEPENDENCE FROM SPAIN AND OTHER EUROPEAN COUNTRIES AND OUR GRAND MARSHALL IS FROM SPAIN? WTF? Godfather Soccerdad -calmdown: The article does not mention one thing about Latin America's independence from Spain or other European countries. This is a parade and festival, not a political rally. Relax not everything has to be so controversial. Shaila Durcal is well known and liked in the Latin American music community. Cosmosmith Why are we celebrating Latin America. This is the United States and we have borders which is where our troops should be. Jules M. I am so happy to hear that Jessica Quintana is being honored! She is a great leader in Long Beach. Mary Brene I had a great time at last year's festival. They did a great job for the first year. I will be there again to enjoy the great music. While I am not Hispanic, it was great to take my two kids to learn about the rich cultures in latin america. Last year, they got to paint a small painting that is still hanging on my fridge! GoGreen Where is Tony Cruz orginally from? I know he was born here, but what nationality is he? Anybody know? Just curious... Scott B. One of the things I love most about Long Beach is that we celebrate diversity. From our Cambodian, to MLK, to LGBT, to Latino communites. It's wonderful to see all the colors of America. everyone is ethnic So Cosmosmith, you're opposed to the St Patrick's day parade, too, right? And Christmas? Shaila Fan WOW! They got Shalia Durcal!!! She is huge. I am going to this for sure. iconz Nothing is certain but death and taxes and Robert Garcia's name appearing in any Long Beach story regarding a parade or colossal neighborhood event. Does this guy know how to party or what? Kress Lofter While I may not always agree with the direction of DLBA events, I think this is a great choice for Downtown. It adds a cultural element that I appreciate and speaks to diversity. JR Read some history Cosmosmith. Latin Americans were here way before Anglo-Americans, plus many of them have roots going back to Native Americans. The whole City of Long Beach was originally a small portion of Rancho Los Alamitos. Why do you suppose the name is in Spanish? CHARLIE I'm sorry, and everybody loves a parade, but what business do we have putting on parades, when yesterday in the budget committee we were discussing in the lbpost how we could balance the budget and start reducing the deficit by temporarly eleminating the parades and music in the park untill we could afford them again, or, was all that sensible talk for naught? Jon My opinion is public streets should not be used for any ethnic or alternative lifestyle parades at all, including St. Patrick's. I suppose they bring in some extra revenue but they seem to cause more unnecessary resentment than its worth. How about we reinforce what we have in common instead of constantly pointing out our differences. If you want to do that in private go right ahead, but using public spaces and resources is a different story. danny b Charlie and Jon: The Latin American Parade and Festival is an entirely self-supporting event. No city funds are used. Joey Charlie: As a business owner on Pine, we appreciate events like this one to support our business. I understand that this event uses no city funds. It is supported by the DLBA and private donations. CHARLIE to danny & joey In that case, no problem - Thank You for the info...
