Do you have ideas about how to make your community a better place to work, live and play? target="_blank">425 Atlantic Ave. The City of Long Beach is hosting a workshop to inform Long Beach residents on how City policy is made and how to apply for open boards and commissions on Monday, August 30, 2010, from 6:00pm to 7:30 pm at the Neighborhood Resource Center, According to a City of Long Beach press release, workshop presenters Carmen Viramontes, Legislative Deputy from the Office of the Mayor, and Assistant City Attorney Heather Mahood will talk about the City of Long Beach's Boards and Commissions, current Commission vacancies and how residents can apply to serve on City Board and Commissions. Attendees are invited to bring canned food to donate to Food Finders to assist our Long Beach neighbors during the current economic crisis. This free workshop will be presented in English with Spanish and Khmer translation available. Free parking is available behind the building and on the street. GhettoChild Finally a venue for many of us to learn Government Policies and how they are implemented. Hopefully many of us in these forums can attend a few of these workshops; and as I've mentioned before we can look for opportunities to make a difference through educating ourselves or perhaps getting involved. LB Taxpayer We have no business continuing these useless, costly commissions when our budget is down the drain. The City Council doesn't listen to them anyway--so their value is practically nil. JoeWeinstein Why is a meeting needed? Shouldn't the city website continually have a come-on and list of commissions and their vacancies, and application procedures to follow? It would suffice to publicize that fact, rather than waste time in a meeting and still leave everyone else uninformed.
