12:30pm | Over the weekend, several local groups and many more residents gathered at King Park to celebrate the opening of the Peace Garden, a community grass roots project bringing a new atmosphere to the area.

The central Long Beach neighborhood, sometimes hampered by violence and illegal activity, welcomed the new garden with open arms. Members of the community will be able to plant and harvest diverse foods representing cultures from all around the city. Grants from the Neighborhood Partners Program provided $5,000 for tool sheds, hoses and tools to maintain the garden.

Groups involved in the project included the Peace Garden Leadership Group and Weed & Seed,

the well known youth organization that helps local youngsters become involved in their neighborhood. The video below was filmed by the office of City Councilmember Dee Andrews, who began the process back in January as part of the city's Martin Luther King Jr. Peace Week and saw their vision become reality. Thanks to their office for providing us with this footage.

What an inspiring story! I MUST stop by and see this garden! Thank you, everyone who made this possible and brought it to be. Peace begins at home.
