10:50am | The City of Long Beach will hold a drawing for local residents, and winners will receive an energy efficiency makeover for their home, City Councilmember Gerrie Schipske announced in an e-mail yesterday. Visit sustainablelb.com to enter the contest.

One Grand Prize winner and one Runner-Up will be selected from each of the nine city districts, equaling a total of eighteen winners. Grand Prize winners receive a $5,000 energy efficiency home makeover and Runners-Up receive an $800 energy efficiency makeover. Entrants must be Long Beach residents, homeowners and customers of Southern California Edison.

"The

Energy Efficiency Opportunity Drawing is designed to encourage Long Beach residents to save energy and money and to provide visibility and best practices for residential energy efficiency installations," Schipske said. "I hope you will participate in the many activities we have to encourage energy conservation and protection of our environment."

Applications can be submitted until November 19. Winners will be announced around November 29, 2010.

Runners-Up will select the energy efficient devices that they want installed from a list that includes pool pumps, refrigerators, air conditioning units, house fans and more. Grand Prize winners will choose their energy efficient measures based on the results of a Home Energy Survey.

Awesome, I'll take a ceiling fan, screen door, and some new double paned windows.

The headline sounds better than the fine print reads. The Grand Prize winner from each district will be selected from a group with the highest SCE bills. So, if you have a HIGH energy bill (read McMansion with pool, jacuzzi, A/C, electronics in each room), you can win a big prize. If you've already been responsible by reducing your energy consumption - or you have a small house with small SCE bill - sorry, you are only eligible for the Runner Up prize.

lb homeowner... really! It's ALWAYS the middle that gets *crewed! LB did something similar for the low income and now the high income- those of us in the MIDDLE always get left behind!
