UPDATE: Health Department Awarded $1M Grant to Improve Health in North Long Beach by Long Beach Post | Staff Reports | 01.27.12 |
+ 4:05pm | Supervisor Don Knabe, of Los Angeles County’s Fourth District, issued the following statement on the news of Kaiser Permanente’s $1 Million grant for a three year investment in a Healthy Eating Active Living (HEAL) program in North Long Beach: “I want to congratulate Mayor Bob Foster and 9th District Councilmember Steve Neal for their hard work and commitment to healthy living in North Long Beach. Long Beach continues to raise the bar on providing education and opportunities for its residents to make healthy lifestyle choices. This grant acknowledges that dedication. Through community partnerships and this generous funding, those most in need will have better access to healthy foods for their families and more opportunities to participate in physical activities necessary for good health and well-being.2:18pm | Healthy choices will be easier in North Long Beach due to a Kaiser Permanente's $1 million 3-year investment in Healthy Eating Active Living (HEAL). The City of Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services (Health Department) received this grant from Kaiser Permanente to promote the public's health in targeted areas of North Long Beach. The Health Department has been granted the funds as the coordinating agency of the Coalition for a Healthy North Long Beach, an alliance of community groups focused on improving health for all residents in North Long Beach. “The Kaiser Permanente HEAL grant will help us improve the lives of residents, and transform entire neighborhoods,” Mayor Bob Foster said. "The residents of North Long Beach will be thrilled at the chance to work with the Coalition for a Healthy North Long Beach and key partners to improve the health of our community by encouraging healthier living and more active lifestyles," said 9th District Councilmember Steven Neal. "I am also delighted to work with Kaiser Permanente, the neighborhoods and community groups to inspire policy, systems, and environmental change through some of the exciting initiatives planned over the next three years." The investment in North Long Beach is part of Kaiser Permanente's new three-year, more than $7 million HEAL Zones initiative across Southern California. The HEAL Zones are designed to help make healthy choices accessible to more people in underserved communities — and in turn to prevent diseases such as diabetes and heart disease that often result from obesity. “Obesity is one of the most pressing health concerns for our communities today. We are especially concerned about the high rate of childhood obesity in North Long Beach, where 55% of individuals over 12 years of age are overweight or obese,” said Joseph Colli, MD, assistant area medical director and Pediatrician at Kaiser Permanente South Bay Medical Center. “Poor diet, inactivity and obesity contribute to the risk for many health issues, such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and stroke. That’s why it’s important that we all work together to create opportunities for children and families to eat healthier and move more in communities like North Long Beach." The vision of the HEAL Zones is that at the end of the three-year grant period, communities will be measurably transformed so that opportunities for engaging in healthy behaviors – walking and biking on safe routes, buying affordable fresh fruits and vegetables close to home, exercising in parks and participating in active after-school programs — are part of daily life. “The Health Department team is excited to receive this funding from Kaiser Permanente and are proud to be partners with them in the fight against obesity in our community,” said Ronald R. Arias, Director of the City's Health Department. “The Health Department and the Coalition for a Healthy North Long Beach look forward to working together to create lasting changes to make the North Long Beach community a healthier place for all to eat better and move more as part of their daily life. In the end, its all about having fun and getting outside to walk, run, swim, bike and play.” The North Long Beach HEAL Zone project brings together partners from the Coalition for a Healthy North Long Beach including the Office of 9th District Councilmember Steven Neal, the Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine, the Department of Public Works, the Department of Development Services, Long Beach Unified School District, Long Beach Community Action Partnership, The Children’s Clinic, Californians for Justice, and various neighborhood associations.

LOL Improve health = Prevent people from shooting each other? liz I am thrilled about this grant award and hope transparency is offered with regard to the use of the funds. One of my favorite places to get exercise is De Forest Park. Along with getting out with my dog, I get to speak with local neighbors, old and young who are also enjoying the park, some playing softball or dodgeball or having a family picnic. It'd be great to see more structured activities for the local community there and Houghton Park. It'd be great if local eateries could be convinced to offer healthier food as well. Rather than driving to Bixby Knolls, 2nd Street, or Seal Beach for healthier menus, I'd rather walk to and support a local eatery. To LOL Your comment reflects that you don't know much about the fine folks, young and old, that live in the area. We are so much more than shootings. Shut up @ lol Guess what... More shootings downtown and in central area than North Long Beach. LOL, get a life Is is sad that people like "LOL" have this short sighted impression of North Long Beach, but not surprising... when a gang member was *executed* in a liquor store parking lot (less than 2 blocks from my home), the local council person (perhaps this goes without saying, but it was NOT the current council person) said I shouldn't be outraged (I was) because it was just a gang member & they will reduce their numbers by taking each other out (I am paraphrasing here but the words were to that effect). Never mind that another person (such as an innocent bystander) could have been shot as well or that due process of law was not a concern for this city "official"... I think that Steve Neal is doing a good job of communicating the needs of NLB better than I have ever seen any other council person do, and NLB really needs it. It is depressing that so many kids in NLB are getting such a poor diet that Kaiser noticed it... getting a cool million from them because of this isn't exactly an shining endorsement of the choices the city planners have made! Goodie This will change lives. A healthier lifestyle, through diet and exercise, helps us all. Hopefully one day LOL will rise above his current level of thinking and be more empathetic. It would be good for his own health, mental health. What??? Anther Press release: I got this same press release from Steve Neal's office. Knabe ??? So... The headline suggests that the story is about Knabe... But it's about a grant that Steve Neal got. Strange... The Man Yea, this should've been about the city of long beach and/or CCM Neal releasing this statement, not Knabe. One day, we'll get some credit.. Long Beach Post The modified headline was only meant to indicate that the story had been updated with new information. It was not meant to take away from anyone's accomplishments or contributions to this cause. The headline has been reverted to its original form. Hey LOL Lovely, lazy Saturday afternoon in my backyard in North Long Beach. My Jack-Chi is lounging on the cement, getting sun. I'm draped on an adirondack chair, reading _Devil in a Blue dress_. The men neighbors behind me are playing old school Mexican music--Mariachi, ballads, cumbias, talking in Spanish. In the distance a lawnmower is chomping grass. Aah. So grateful for my neighborhood, neighbors, and backyard. Great There goes the right to use the "twinke defense" in North LB. Nice Try One million dollars may improve the mental health of one block of NLB. Agree with LOL I kind of agree with LOL. North Long Beach has become a hodge podge of scary and OK. Some neighborhoods are very nice, just working class people doing their best. Other parts are just plain scary - and there are a LOT of bars and crummy motels along Long Beach Blvd. Given that there's not much tourism that far north, hard to imagine the motels aren't just crash pads for all kinds of unsavory activities. As for the poster enjoying the Mexican music and Spanish language from the neighbors, can you honestly say you've never had the urge to say "You're in the US, learn and speak English, would you???" Paul "it will transform entire neighborhoods," said Bob Foster. He must think residents were born yesterday. What world does he live in? To Paul What world does Bob Foster live in? Apparently one filled with platitudinous sound bites that mean nothing but sound optimistic.
