Deukmejian Courthouse? Supervisor Knabe Thinks So by Ryan ZumMallen | Long Beach News | 06.26.09 | | Text Size: +
In a statement sent to the LBPOST.com today, Supervisor Don Knabe announced his intention to seek recognition of long-time Long Beach resident and former California Governor George Deukmejian by naming the new Long Beach Courthouse in his honor. Knabe today released the following statement to the LBPOST.com: Governor Deukmejian has spent decades as a local leader in Long Beach and across California and the nation, with a legendary record in public safety, judicial appointments, law, and reducing crime. Supervisor Knabe is honored to be leading the effort to name the new courthouse in tribute to a Long Beach legend and a great American, the Honorable George Deukmejian. Knabe made the first public announcement of his intention last night at the Long Beach Area Chamber of Commerce gala, introducing the former Governor as the man whose name would grace the new Long Beach courthouse. Deukmejian represented Long Beach as a member of the State Assembly and then Senate from 1962 to 1970, served as Attorney General from 1979 to 1983 and served as Governor of California from 1983 to 1991. There are also two Long Beach streets named after him: Deukmejian Drive near Blair Field and Deukmejian Way on the Long Beach State campus, which I walked every day for three years on my way to class. The Supervisor lists support from Chief Justice Ron George of the California Supreme Court, Presiding Judge Tim McCoy of the Los Angeles Superior Court, Presiding Judge Arthur Jean and other judges in the current Long Beach Courthouse. The decision will ultimately be up to a state court agency. More to come on this story… Disclosure: LBPOST.com publisher Shaun Lumachi is under contract with the Office of Supervisor Don Knabe. Jay Beeler I believe that you are confusing Earl Warren Drive on the CSULB campus with Deukmejian Drive, which runs through Recreation Park Golf Course. Ryan Z Hello Jay. There are two streets named after Deukmejian in LB. I will never forget the one on campus, it was ingrained into my brain many, many times. Jay Beeler Right you are; Deukmejian Way exists but does not show up on the online campus map. Ryan Z That's true, I tried to Google it and when it didn't appear I panicked, screaming "I know it's there!" Haha. I guess it just doesn't show up for whatever reason Helen Najar I can't think of a better name for the new courthouse - I congratulate the Supervisor for honoring the Governor and our city this way Alix There are two great aspects to this story. 1) A new courthouse in Long Beach 2) A new courthouse in Long Beach named for George Deukmejian ed Best local goverment decision to date. It is a well deserved honor. Dennis Great idea, but I am waiting for those who are most responsible for electing our electeds--not the voters by the way--to name it after Che Guevara or George Meany or Samuel Gompers or Cindy Sheehan or Al Gore...nope those won't do...why not Barack Obama Courthouse? CHS Deukmejian - good choice for name. But, how about the Lucas brothers? Malcolm was a federal judge then Chief Justice of the Cali Supreme Court; Campbell ("Sandy") was a California court of appeal justice. Paul Snoop Doggie Courthouse Chor Izo I wouldn't like to give the name of a politician to the court house, why not the name of a police officer. "Charlie" Parks Naming a new court building for former Governor Deukmejian is an excellent idea. The proposed location is a bad idea. Consider improving the area surrounding Orange Ave, Willow St., California Ave. and Spring St. This will make the court assessable to the majority. Bianca Great idea. Let's do it.
