A press release sent out by Jill Hill, a consultant for the city's Environmental Services Bureau and president of the Wrigley Area Neighborhood Alliance, announces her intention to run for the 7th District City Council seat in next April's election. The press release is provided in full below:

Long Beach, CA – Jill Hill recently pulled papers and has emerged as another candidate for the 7th District Council 2010 race. Hill, 50, is currently the President and Co-Founder of the Wrigley Area Neighborhood Alliance (WANA), serves as Chair of the Community Development Advisory Commission (CDAC), and is employed as a Consultant for the City of Long Beach’s Environmental Services Bureau working with their Litter Abatement & Awareness Campaign.

Joan Greenwood, Long Beach Sustainability Commissioner and Environmental Consultant and activist said, "I have lived in Wrigley for almost 23 years. Jill has been in the Wrigley for over half of those years. She is a proven and tenacious advocate for Quality of Life in the neighborhoods. She takes her positions on City-wide issues based on a thorough investigation of the facts, not rumors and false perceptions.”

Since moving to Long Beach in 1985, Hill’s Long Beach background includes 20 years of community service and 23 years of self-employment. “I have seen so many great changes and improvements to this city since moving here. I love this city. However, I have seen some not-so-good changes. The years I’ve invested servicing my community to make a positive contribution linked with my business and city experience creates a great foundation for my candidacy”, Hill stated, “and I’m ready for the challenge and would be honored to serve as the next 7th District Council Member.”

Jan Ward, neighborhood activist, Community Development Advisory Commissioner, and President of WESCA (West East Side Community Association) commented,” I support Jill’s decision to run and I know that she can make a tremendous impact in her district. Jill is dedicated, thorough, organized, committed and I feel that she is running for all the right reasons. My relationship with her as a fellow community leader and a commissioner under her leadership has enabled me to see these qualities in her that are viable for the position of councilperson.”

“I realized 25 years ago the necessity of making a contribution, working for, and giving back to the community and that is exactly what I will continue to do as Councilmember for the 7th District,” Hill said. “I know I have something of value to offer Long Beach."

Rumors have abounded suggesting that Reyes Uranga is considering a bid to run for mayor in next April's election but she has neither confirmed nor denied that of yet. She was defeated by Bonnie Lowenthal in a June 2008 Democratic primary for a seat in the State Assembly.  Her husband, Roberto Uranga, has announced his intention to run for the seat, as has Assistant City Auditor James Johnson.

I need to learn more about Jill but Uranga for mayor is the worst possible thing that could ever happen to Long Beach. She has done nothing but harm to this city in her push to give every tax dollar to unions and import as much poverty to LB as possible. She is absolutely horrible.

lbresident, do you have anything to support your rant? Maybe you should look at the poverty programs Ms. Hill has supported as a CDAC commissioner? I'm a 7th District resident who feels Tonia fighthing for more park space and asking the tough questions on all the issues - including employee contracts - has made the city more accountable and a much better place to live.

That's what we need in City Council- NEW BLOOD! The Mayor is doing fine...

Long Beach is my home
Funny...lbresident and luvthelbc are both saying the exact same thing. It simply depends on your perspective...I place my vote with lbresident.

It looks like the same people seizing every opportunity to rant and rave about anything Tonia. The fact is that this woman has stood up to the detractors who slam her because they are angry that she will not be influenced by the old time Long Beach cronyism that has been the ruin of this city for years. Although she is one among nine councilmembers responsile for what passes at the council, she is blamed as the person responsible for getting things passed. That would qualify her as a prime candidate for the mayorial position. Decent citizens who weigh information without prejudice have to see the exageration in the allegations that Councilmember Uranga gives "every tax dollar to unions and import(s) as much poverty to LB as possible." The more discerning citizenry will chalk this type of rhetoric up to the agitational hate propaganda that it is. With ragard to Jill Hill, she is an honest hard working citizen who deserves to be considered for a position on the City Council, as do all those who have signed up for the job. It is no picnic.

luvthelbc, the only thing good about uranga is that she is totally incompetent. If she had the skills to accomplish her disasterous policies of union support, more low income housing, and increased welfare we would all be in worse shape. We're all really hoping the 7th makes a better decision this coming election.

Ms. Hill has certainly shown her care for the neighborhoods--good luck to her!

divided in wrigley
Jill Hill has effectively divided the Wrigley community and created unneccesary tension between residents who used to work together. A vote for Jill is a vote for disaster!

Sailingbud
I've worked closely with Jill Hill for the last four years and could think of no one better for the city than her.

I'm curious as to why it is a "rant" or "shrill" when someone disagrees with some and "thoughtful" when they agree. Just curious is all. All speech not free?

dukeres
If you wish to know what Jill Hill will do for this area, study the gadflyism of Mike Ruehle on 2nd Street. Divisiveness. lbresident is a perpetual right wing gadfly with a deep hatred for unions, if you've ever followed posts on the P-T. Anything he/she sees as Democrat is socialism. Not only that, but he/she is a resident in Belmont Shores. Notice how he/she switched a candidate for the 7th into Tonia bashing in seven words on the first comment?

Juan Pardell
dukeres - Specifically, what brand of "gadflyism" has Jill Hill practiced? From what I recall of Jill, she's a tireless advocate of improving the quality of life for not just residents of the 7th district, but all of Long Beach. I see absolutely nothing wrong with that.

lbresident
dukeres, call me whatever you want. But I challenge you to name one single good thing tonia has ever accomplished as a council member.
