Death Of Long Beach Toddler Leaves Family Seeking Support by Ryan ZumMallen | Long Beach News | 09.14.09 | | Text Size: +
If you havent heard by now, it saddens me to report that a Long Beach family was devastated on Friday night when a driver collided with the wagon that was carrying a one year-old girl and a two year-old boy at the intersection of 10th & Redondo. The mother and father were returning home from a walk with their children when the driver who has been cited for driving under the influence and driving with a suspended license slammed into the wagon. The boy will survive with cuts and scrapes, but sadly, the young girl passed away at the scene. The Press-Telegrams Kelly Puente originally broke the story on Friday night and you can read the truly disturbing details there.I visited the makeshift memorial for young Kaylee Alvarez this afternoon, and found a small crowd of people reflecting on the tragedy. Candles, flowers, stuffed animals and handwritten notes adorned the streetlight in memory of Kaylee and in support of her mourning family. Kaylees uncle, Guadalupe Soto, was putting the finishing touches on a notice that directs well-wishers to the familys donation account all funds will go to Kaylees funeral expenses. We appreciate it a lot, Soto told me. A lot of people have come to help us. Theyre saying they cant believe what happened, and that not even an animal could do something like that. Soto spoke with his sister, Kaylees mother, on the phone just ten minutes before the accident as the family was returning from a walk to Wilson High school the alma mater of both parents. They talked about plans to attend another nieces quinceanera celebration that was planned for the 19th. That date has now been reserved for Kaylees funeral. A few minutes later, Soto received a call from his father, who explained that there had been an accident and no one had been able to locate Kaylee. As Soto rushed to the scene, his sister called she was en route to the hospital with her injured son, but had no idea where her daughter was. She was saying, Find my daughter, find my daughter, Soto explains. I said, Im gonna find her.He arrived at the intersection and demanded answers from officers, who took him aside and said that Kaylee had been found, and that she had passed away. He was heartbroken. I let them tell her, he says. Its something that was too hard for me to tell her. A family has been shattered through no fault of their own, and now they are asking for help. The Press-Telegram today reports that the family has set up an account at Wescom Credit Union for anyone who wishes to donate for Kaylees funeral. The account number is 708248. Today, the District Weeklys Theo Douglas rounds up the weekends news coverage of the event and explains his familiarity with the area after residing there for more than a decade. He raises the question of safety on Redondo, and points to recent accidents. If I may add my own addition to Douglas essay, I spent two years during college living just three blocks from the intersection that took the life of young Kaylee Alvarez. I wont say that there arent safety improvements to be made to Redondo, but it is my personal opinion that Friday nights accident is a separate issue. An accident occurred because a man who had no business operating a vehicle according to the state of California was doing so while under the influence. So maybe the speed limit could be reduced along Redondo, or maybe an extra stoplight constructed or speed bumps installed. Or maybe the lesson is that we must always hold ourselves and each other accountable, and understand when it is and is not appropriate to get behind the wheel of a car because the person who made the decision to drive on Friday night may not have been slowed by an extra streetlight. That was his decision and the responsibility is his, not the intersections. A family will have to live with that mans decision for the rest of their lives, and if the horror of that thought will stop someone from making a bad decision, then we wont need to make any changes to the street. Again, the account number to donate to the Alvarez family is 708248 at Wescom Credit Union. Be safe. ![]() Comments

Nikol So nicely written. This is such a sad story and it breaks my heart to read this but I hope everyone reads it and supports this family in their difficult time. beth devastating. Under the influence? What can we as a community do? The driver must be held accountable. effini Maybe this will highlight the need for the newer, flashing light, crosswalks in the area... similar to what is used in Newport Beach, near the pier, and throughout the city of San Luis Obispo. I'm very sorry for the family's loss. Long Beach Reader Why doesn't anyone report who committed this awful crime? Brooke I don't know this family but my heart breaks for them. I am brought to tears over their devastating loss. May God bless them and may the man who killed Kaylee remain behind bars the rest of his life. Laurie Manny I have always worried about children in wagons crossing the street as well as the bicycles pulling children in a cart behind them. When the parent reaches safety the children haven't, one second of confusion could have disastrous effect. The children are too low to the ground and possible out of vision of an oncoming SUV. Perhaps I think too much... My office is on Redondo just north of Broadway. We have a parking lot with a separate entrance and exit. Exiting the lot onto Redondo can be a terrifying experience. The traffic moves too quickly. There are many side streets without streetlights that merge into Redondo between the main avenues, transitioning from these to Redondo has become increasingly difficult over the last few years, the traffic is just too fast and furious. I agree, we need either more lights, a few stop signs, an enforced speed limit - something to slow the traffic down some. My condolences to the family. Sickened That is the most distressing story I've heard in a long time. They should do the same to the driver and see how it feels. I hope he is given maximum penalties. LBGuy I feel sorry for the Alvarez family and also for the wife and four children of the scum that killed the little girl. They will all have to live with his crime forever. That guy should be locked up for 100 years. KC in LB This tragedy has destroyed not just Kaylee's family, but the family of the perpetrator, too, who apparently has several children, himself. John The P-T story paints a gruesome image. I found out that in order to transfer a donation for the funeral from your Wescom account to the Alvarez's Wescom account, you need to note the Alvarez's account number (708248) and the account type (00). Rickatsea Under the influence of… what?? Alcohol cocaine, meth, marijuana, what does this statement mean? I feel it is important considering we are now speaking of ‘legalizing marijuana”. How did this happen? There are signals at that corner. Did the driver go through a signal? Was this a case of jaywalking (child endangerment)? I understand the grief but was only one party wrong for this disaster? Why is the whole story not being printed? Or is it? JHZ What is really sad is two families have been damaged by this. Not just the Alverezes, but the family of the man responsible. He has four children. They and their mother are going to have to live with this the rest of their lives. The man had a suspended license, I wonder if he had prior DUIs. I've seen people run through red lights in Long Beach so many times. I saw a person do this at Fourth and Redondo a few months ago. People around here are irresponsible. It's too bad they want to cut the police force. They should be giving more tickets for breaking traffic laws. Instead they have so many violent crimes to deal with. This city has real problems. Until people accept responsibility for their actions, nothing will change. CHARLIE I have to agree with Rick at Sea that the PT article does not give the details how the accident happened - booze, drugs, jaywalking or whatever; How ever tragic this thing is - we need to know the full story and wether or not did the driver have comp & liability insurance coverage as is required by Calif.State Law??? The PT or LBP article did not state, BUT, if there is insurance coverage - this changes everything for the tragic loss of Kaylee to the Alvarez family! so so what? Sh*t happens JR Salazar This is vehicular manslaughter AT THE MINIMUM. This driver's looking at some serious jail time, yo. Angel How tragic and deeply sad for family and loss of a child and injury to the other! Although it will not bring back the child, the arresponsible driver should be prosecuted to the full extend of law and be made to pay restitution to family. Hopefullym many in the community will help by: The Press-Telegram today reports that the family has set up an account at Wescom Credit Union for anyone who wishes to donate for Kaylee’s funeral. The account number is 708248. It is so sad when such a young one's life is taken like this! Dennis It is not just the lights people run, in our Bixby Knolls neighborhood people roll the stops signs at 5-10 mph all the time, drive through the alleys at 10-20. And these are residents of the neighborhood who are sober! Is it because neigbhorhoods no longer have kids playing and riding bikes out in the streets or is it because people get so self contained and wrapped up in their auto-cocoon they are oblivious to their environment and possibility they could run over someone's dog or a child on a bike or scooter? Slow down people, just slow the heck down. John Greet Rickatsea and CHARLIE: Not all of the facts are publicly available yet because the collision is still under investigation. It sometimes takes weeks to sort through all of the witness accounts and indirect evidence in a crime of this scope. I'm certain that Ryan and others will offer us more facts as soon as they are made available. I would suggest, however, that whether or not Dinkins was insured will have very little effect in mitigating, to any degree, the Alverez family's sudden and entirely senseless loss of their infant daughter and sister. Deno Very well put paragraph on personal responsibility. I'm sure there are many people who read that and will think twice before getting behind the wheel while under the influence. Rae This is tragic and so very sad for this family and our community. The person, the murderers name should be reported and he/she needs to be put away in prison for life. doris lee How many different ways could this tragedy been avoided? In addition to people who have no business driving, I wonder if putting a left turn arrow at the intersection would help...I sat there yesterday South bound on Redondo trying to make a left turn onto 10th for 15 minutes, because even though the light turned yellow, traffic kept going through and only 1 car at a time barely made a turn at high speed without getting hit! this set up is an accident breeder!! dc Was the guy who did this an illegal? Directed at "So" 1st - The fact that this comment was even allowed is rediculous. How dare you say something like that, "sh*t happens" is the rudest thing you could possibly say. Two families have been ruined and it was due to drinking and driving. It really disappoints me that people can be such low lifes. javier My preayers go out to you and your family. The Lord is our Stregnth and Refuge. Elliot G. What a tragedy! The person's name is in the P-T article. and Dc, no he's not "an illegal." People are good and evil, that has nothing to do with how the government views their legitimacy. The family is Mexican, legal, I suspect, but for some reason, that doesn't seem to matter.... EMO HOW SAD... "/ OMG, I'M So0o0o HURT. AND, I WISH THIS LITTLE GIRL THE BEST UO THERE IN LOFE. <3 <3 <3 (*v*) lilly t. ok so syt happens? syt like this can be prevented. my heart goes out to yessenia alvarez a cousin of mine never did i meet kayllee but hearing what had happend broke my heart.if anything the driver shouldve ran into a tree ir sumthinf not an innocent little girl who didnt deerve this. and for u cold hearted a******* you wont realize how it feels until you lose someone you love.so if you have nothing nice to say keep it to yourself as they taught us in elementry school. R.I.P kaylee u will never be forgotten. i have donated and plan to donate some more. i hope he never gets out and save another life,, it could of been kaylee , its exactly why ppl like him need to be put away. <333 kAYLEEE Beach Cities Mustang Club Please consider contributing to our Kaylee Fund.
