Article by LBPOSTSports.com managing editor Mike Guardabascio

Stan Lee, creator of probably almost every comics character you've ever heard from besides Superman and Batman, is largely responsible for ushering in a new style of realistic, emotion-based writing in comics. His innovations changed the landscapes of the comics industry forever, pointing it in the direction it's been heading for the last forty years. So, who better to usher in a new era in Long Beach comicdom, by cutting the ribbon at the first annual Long Beach Comic Con?

Comics writer Jeph Loeb was on hand to read Lee a lengthy proclamation from Los Angeles County, and Long Beach city councilmember Robert Garcia read another from the city of Long Beach, which pronounced October 2nd as Stan Lee Day in Long Beach. Then the floor—and a giant pair of scissors—were handed over to Stan The Man himself.

"Some Stan Lee Day," he joked. "They're still delivering mail, and the banks are still open." He also wondered, "If I'm so great, why aren't I tax exempt?"

Then, after hefting the (truly) giant scissors and joking that he should've brought his own from home, Stan snipped the red ribbon, and officially opened the Con—and our coverage—for the weekend. Come back later on Saturday for a recap and a photo gallery from the floor!
