Supervisor Don Knabe's State of the County Address LiveLos Angeles County Supervisor Don Knabe will announce today that Long Beach will receive $9.2 million for two capital projects, the improvement of the Lakewood Golf Course and the refurbishment of the San Gabriel River Bike Path. The projects are part of a $42 million commitment to new projects in communities across Knabe’s Fourth District. He will officially announce the plan with further details in his annual State of the County address at the Long Beach Convention Center today.

For the first time, the speech will be broadcast online at Knabe.com. The event begins at 11:30am and the broadcast will begin at 12:30pm, when Knabe’s speech begins. The Long Beach Area Chamber of Commerce will host the event.

A quick breakdown of the two projects:
  • The Lakewood Golf Course will receive $5.63 million for increased storage, improved handicap access and junior golf access.
  • The San Gabriel River Bike Path will receive $3.57 million to refurbish eight miles of the path that winds through eight other cities apart from Long Beach.
Knabe will also announce $10,000 to fund the relocation of the Wild Oats Community Garden, a small garden between 10th & Anaheim that will need to be destroyed as construction from the Termino Avenue Storm Drain Project will run through the garden.

A press release from Knabe’s office indicates that the flurry of projects throughout his district will create hundreds of jobs. No word yet on how many of those will specifically be needed for the two Long Beach projects, or from what levels the funding will be coming. More details will be released during Knabe’s State of the County address later today.

I can think of at least 10 ways to better spend those funds. Funding LBUSD tops the list.

No Logic
But nothing for the schools - our garden of children?

ron
what about job openings? I need a job!

Mary
Refurbish the golf course - what a waste.

$5.63 million for increased storage, improved handicap access and junior golf access. What!? Will they be storing rakes and lawnmowers in golden palaces? Who are the handicap flocking to the golf course? I'm having a hard time crunching these numbers and figuring out how this is necessary.

I agree... what a waste! This really gets me fired up!

My sincere hope is that LBPost, Press Telegram, Signal Tribune, Uptown or Downtown Gazzette, District, singularly or all, would reprint the delivery of the Honorable Don Knabe's State of The County speech on this day. The man delivered an outstanding presentation, covering all bases and never stepped on anybody else turf. It's a pleasure to have known Don since his days in Cerritos. I would pleased if his wife and family would loan him to the State of California as Governor in this next gubernatoral election. He has my vote and all the energy I can muster to aid in such a campaign.

Give the money to the schools!!!

John
Unfortunetly, on Tuesday Long Beach voters demonstrated very clearly that funding LBUSD is not a priority for them. What a shame since LBUSD has clearly shown, in the past several years, with their many national achievement awards, that they are good stewards of voters tax money.

Manny
Well in long beach the county has nothing to do with the schools... But the county can fund projects that are youth oriented like community centers parks and yes golf courses

The storage is water storage. LA County doesn't fund schools. This does provide jobs. If you want more money for schools, you may vote for higher property taxes on your LB property.

We are elated the San Gabriel River Bike Path will be repaired. We use it 4 times a week from La Palma to the beach and it is in need of repair. Thank you!!!!
