Red Bull Eyes Another Extreme Event In Long Beach by Ryan ZumMallen | Archive | 01.14.10 |
+ One outrageous and fun-fueled stunt deserves another, right? After the wildly popular New Year’s Eve event that saw extreme athlete Travis Pastrana set a Guinness World Record by jumping his Subaru rally car 274-feet over downtown’s Rainbow Harbor, Red Bull will make a return to Long Beach this August to hold their successful Flugtag flying contraption competition. Contestants will build homemade soapbox-style vehicles and launch them off ramps and into the water in an attempt to defy gravity for a few brief seconds. The competition is extremely popular and attracts truly goofy and awe-inspiring fits of creativity. Few details are available at the moment, except that the event will take place over the weekend of August 7-8. Red Bull spokesperson Scott Houston said in an e-mail to the LBPOST.com that more information will be available next week. “This will be a really great event and we're looking forward to coming back to Long Beach - Red Bull had a blast at out Red Bull: New Year. No Limits. event with Travis Pastrana,” reads the e-mail from Houston. John Sangmeister, owner of the downtown restaurant Gladstone’s, also sent out an e-mail earlier in the week that excitedly announced the event. “If you caught the NYE show, I hope you'll join us for this one in person. Last year's Flugtag brought 80,000 people to Portland!”
