Stevie Merino: The Other Option For Mayor by Ryan ZumMallen | Long Beach News | 01.29.10 | | Text Size: +
That is, until 21-year old Cerritos College student and lifelong Long Beach resident Stevie Merino threw her hat into the ring, filing papers to challenge Foster for the city’s chief elected position. Although the Mayor’s race is nonpartisan, Merino is a member of the Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSL). According to the PSL’s web site, it is a “new” party that defines capitalism as “the system in which all wealth and power is held by a tiny group of billionaires and their state” and “is the source of the main problems confronting humanity today: imperialist war, poverty, exploitation, layoffs, unemployment, racism, sexism, lesbian/gay/bi/trans oppression, environmental destruction, mass imprisonment, unionbusting, and more.”Merino’s age and party affiliation are sure to raise more than a few eyebrows – but little is known about Merino as a candidate, and virtually nothing has been said of her ideas or motivations. Merino took the chance to explain her positions and reasons for running during an exclusive interview yesterday afternoon with the LBPOST.com. Her campaigning has already begun, and Merino is energetic, motivated, and gladly challenges Mayor Foster to a debate. “We’ll try to contact him,” Merino said. “I think for democracy to work, one candidate going against the other candidate would be ideal.”The Mayor’s office wasn’t able to provide a definitive response as of press time, but if the opportunity does eventually present itself, a debate between the two candidates would certainly be interesting. Merino may be young, but she adheres strongly to her beliefs and is passionate about helping the city’s working class. Growing up near Drake Park in downtown Long Beach, Merino developed a strong desire to defend those who need it most. That desire is what drove her to organize anti-war protests as a student at Lakewood High, it’s what directed her to the PSL five years ago, and it’s what has shaped the ideal that may come to define Merino’s campaign. “Cut the police budget. It’s over half of the City’s budget, and meanwhile social services are being cut extremely, and teachers are being laid off,” she says. “We’ve put so much money and effort into our Police Department, why don’t we put this much effort into children’s education?Clearly, the City’s General Fund doesn’t fund education but it does fund some early childhood education and youth job training programs and on those points, Merino is persistent. “Let’s pay the teachers more, let’s continue to give them raises. And this is all with the Police Department and their lawsuit [against the City] because they want to be paid for the time it takes them to get dressed. I don’t get paid to get dressed when I have to go to work, on top of the millions of dollars that the Police Department is already getting.” Merino says that her position on slimming down the Police Department budget – which does, after all, consume more than two-thirds of the General Fund – is reflective of the things she’s been told by residents in downtown communities that she has been visiting door-to-door for the past two weeks. Her campaign has thus far been based on meeting with the people on the ground and listening to the issues that are affecting them. Those meetings, Merino says, have helped shape her ideas that the money being spent in Long Beach is not reaching those who need it most. “The teachers and city workers, why are they are taking furloughs and cuts? We have the resources, it’s just going to the wrong places.” What are the right places? Aside from schools and social services, more attention needs to be paid to housing and job creation. Merino tells many stories about tenants she’s met that are being victimized by slumlords that hike rent without providing basic living conditions for their tenants. Her campaign is staging a street meeting at 7th & Pacific on February 9th to address the issue. Merino is also adamant that the community is hurting for work above all else, and that any conversation about helping the working class must begin with job creation. “More jobs is less crime,” she says. “Cut the police budget. Instead of it being over half of the budget, put those resources to create access to jobs, job training. Instead of arresting youth, have youth job training. Jobs provide money. It provides people to no longer have the necessity to do other things, or make other means to find resources.” Merino is well aware that slashing the Police budget could potentially mean a loss of officers – when asked if that concerned her, Merino replied: “No. Not at all.” She says that providing social services and care to those who need it should take priority. Her focus on education, job growth and residents’ rights are the driving force behind every word. It’s a philosophy borne from her experiences growing up in working class neighborhoods of Long Beach, but molded through her affiliation with the Party for Socialism and Liberation; a party whose public perception Merino would like to change. She acknowledges that some may be alarmed by the word “socialism” – Merino describes it simply as “People over power” – but says that she hopes they’ll take the opportunity to examine what her campaign stands for. The PSL web site defines its idea of socialism as “a system where the wealth of society belongs to those who produce it, the working class, and is used in a planned and sustainable way for the benefit of all. In place of greed, domination and exploitation, we stand for solidarity, friendship and cooperation between all peoples.” “People have this false idea that their things are going to be taken away and it is not the case,” she says. “We just want to meet people’s needs over those of billionaires; which I’m pretty sure most of the people are not.” Merino got her start in politics when she was drawn to the PSL because of their anti-war efforts, and has since helped organized protests that have included thousands against education tuition hikes, police brutality, housing slumlords and other efforts. At a relatively young age, Merino’s activism is the basis of her political experience. She’s aware of the underdog role she’ll be playing until the April election, and has strong feelings about the process after just two weeks of campaigning. “When you get in the realm of bourgeois politics and this whole system, you see the contradictions of it. The contradictions of quote-unquote ‘democracy.’ The people who win are the big billionaires who have the corporate bosses behind them, not the interests of the poor working people or the people that they’re supposed to represent. And the fact that so many people make a joke about my age or the seriousness of our campaign goes to show the fact that it’s not true democracy at hand, because if that were the case, then you wouldn’t need millions of dollars to win or to run.” Merino will officially kick off her campaign for Mayor of Long Beach at 3:00pm this Saturday, January 30 with a speech and rally at Shades of Afrika cultural marketplace located at 1001 E. 4th Street. ShesYoungandNaive Is this article from the Onion? This is what LB needs, a 21 year old socialist who goes to community college (couldn't get into CSULB?). She's not worried about losing police officers? Will "F--- the police!" be her campaign slogan? Hey Stevie, how about transferring to a 4 year university first. While you're there take a few economics classes. If you can do that and manage to graduate then get a real job (opposed to being a politician). After a few years of real life experience then maybe think about running for mayor. After working for your own money (and being taxed for it when you make it AND when you spend it) for a few years you'll probably have a different perspective on giving hand outs to those who didn't have to work as hard to you did. Sarcasm A 21 years old community college student? Sounds like a highly motivated individual. Let's get this genius into office. And no this is not an article from the Onion, although it might be a subplot from "The Community". If you want to change the world Stevie graduate college and make an actual contribution to society first before telling others how the world should be. You know nothing of life, you've only just began experiencing it. Jon She's not even qualified to be an intern for the mayor's office. If she came into a job interview with her credentials, I wouldn't hire her. Finish college first Stevie. YoungandNaiveHuh Young? Yes. Naive? Yes. A valuable life lesson? Most likely yes. Stevie, unless she has knowledge of how the city runs, will run into the ground pretty quickly. But this is not to say we should discourage her. As a 21 year old, even knowing how to file the paperwork and garnering enough motivation to ATTEMPT getting elected is notable. I say props to Stevie and hope this be a life lesson for her. The chances are against her, no doubt, and she is VERY young and inexperienced, but I, for some reason, am relieved to see political activism still alive in the younger generation...granted, it may be a wee bit displaced. Freedom Speaks It is a free country. Free to speak your mind and free to win or lose with the choices we make. Many have died to protect these freedoms. Ms. Merino will learn from this experience. Lesson One is that public safety is expected by the voters. Lesson Two is that it takes significant resources to mount any campaign. The ideals and resilency of youth are evident here. I wish her well, but Foster gets my vote. cityemployee @ShesYoungandNaive: Technically, she is a CSULB student. Unfortunately, the educational budget cuts to the CSUs kept her tuition high. Like many of our fellow 49ers, we come from a working to middle class. She was unable to continue paying for college. Hence, community college as a viable option. I agree with YoungandNaiveHuh. Let this be a learning lesson. hmama Yes, she is young & naive but I hope that her running will bring create a more interesting campaign- and will bring some important issues to the surface. It makes me nervous to have an unopposed candidate- and an opponent might cause Foster to campaign and address subjects that he might not otherwise. She brings up some important issues of social services, education and housing- which anyone living in LB can agree are crucial [along with a regulated and responsible police force]. I am looking forward to a lively campaign. Community colleges provide excellent general education- some basic classes at CC were far superior to those at CSULB [numerous professors teach at both]- giving you a great education at a fraction of the price. Four-year Universities are cost-prohibitive to a number of extremely smart and talented students in LB and that is one of Stevie's points. Don’t fault her for the system she is trying to change. Even so, I would vote for Foster [or Bev O'Neill if I could] but I am thrilled a young person is taking the initiative. Cheers! ShesYoungandNaive @cityemployee I recently graduated from a Cal State just a few years ago. I came from a middle class family as well and paid my own way through college. Are you telling me students can't come up with another $1,000 or so to pay for the tuition hike? Stevie can "file the paperwork...to ATTEMPT getting elected" but she can't figure out how to get an extra 1K for a student loan. The student loans are out there, I got them (and paid them off) myself. Also, the CSU system is an incredible bargain compared to other state schools. You think paying a few thousand a year is tough, go back east and try pay $20K a year for a state school. We're relatively lucky to have the CSU system cost as little as it does. Glenn Why not be open-minded to this young gal? Listen to what she says... Why not help and encourage her because someone like her can be valuable to our city! Don't you think our city (and country) needs more people for checks and balances? I'm excited to hear what this gal has to say... We all know what the result will be. But I have to say, she has bigger b***s than most people who complain about our city and not do a thing... Opposite Man if not Mayor, then maybe a position on the Arts Council? she seems as qualified as the rest of the members. Nikol I think she is amazing and brave and has valid opinions. Yes she is new to this but this will teach her and just make her better for next time. I wish her luck and I hope that people see what she is doing as a positive respectful thing even if you disagree. You want young people to care but then attack them when they go after something the believe in. Great job Stevie!! Nice article Ryan. TheManCityLife Why is everyone hating on her? Does she not have the right to run for Mayor? Does she not have good reasons? We've see what all those "police officers" did in '09 with all those murders and crimes. Cops? Where? If she wants to run let her run but don't hate on her, this is America and this is part of our culture. Go ahead and judge her because she goes to a junior college, that's a good reason to bring her down when she's only trying to bring the city up. I'm not sure on her chances of winning, but her intentions are real as F*&^ GrumpyGuy Stevie is exactly what this place needs. She is absolutely right that this country is run by billionaires. We lost our democracy piece by piece to the corporations and the billionaires that control them. I'm a business person (past business owner and present sales manager which is hardly "left") pushing 50 and have voted as an Independent since I was 18. The Dem-Gop uniparty and all the endless tit for tat Left vs Right baloney is a planned distraction to keep our eyes off the ball. The same system of control by the wealthy and distraction of the rest works on the State and local levels of government. We need young, naive (un-jaded, un-corrupted) people to revive our democracy, our country and our morality. We are Rome in the final stages and we are too glib, insolated, distracted and plain dumb to see it. Let the new people who still know right from wrong have a chance. Sure she'll mess up a lot of things becuase she is inexperienced. But so what, the system is a mess now. We still don't know where Foster's out of town campaign money came from. We do know he was CEO of a mega corporation (SCE) who denies global warming and runs a power monopoly. Stevie is right that the police dpt. needs their sick contract ripped up. How corrupt are they to be suing us for trivialities when they already have so much. I say the only way our corrupt corpratacracy can be thrown out and democracy reinstituted is by a popular groundswell (revolution) of the young. Bring it on. AnotherCollegeStudent Capitalism is not the enemy, bureacracy is. The problem with extreme ideology and belief is the failure to understand a middle ground. There is NO absolute democracy. Although she made some good points, I still think that she, her party and her companions' absolutist values do not give way to other possibilities. Ms. Merino and her party's idealistic appeal will probably attract the cynical youth, and that's what terrifies me. I'm already seeing it among my peers. It's so "hip" to be a tough-shelled "rebel" nowadays that students don't think realistically anymore. Your choice, though. Vote or don't vote. If you don't like either candidate, then take action in the local arena and contribute yourself (volunteer, go to school board/city meetings, talk with the politicians, secretaries, and the little people). I always say choose the less (potentially) "evil." Ms. Merino's company alone says who she is and what she stands for... Here's an honest opinion: it's NOT about age, as she and her campaign are pointing out. But it DOES come to hands-on non-thoeretical PRACTICAL experience not only in Long Beach but OUTSIDE the city/state/(or even country)... Not to mention, most of the PSL youths I've met so far are condescending close-minded "intellectuals." It's a sad era for real intelligence when the only intelligence our youth perceives is based on rebellious acts of riots and idealistic cynicism. ExactlyWhatSheSaid It might be important to note that she explains that it is people like those commenting here about "naivete" that give in to the idea of bourgeois democracy. Everything about an unopposed candidate is unsettling. Foster has years of experience as an executive and now as a mayor but what has he done for the city? He has created no jobs for the people of Long Beach, drove the police budget to a militaristic level, gave city workers unfair cuts that were not shared by the police. I think she has some good points. Mayor after mayor has used the same tactics. They have been "experienced" and nothing has happened to benefit the vast majority of people in Long Beach. Contrary to what people are making it seem, Stevie is a worker and a student and has what little experience people here are demanding. ("work and be taxed so you can understand"). That is insane. If we are to simply have real democracy in this society and in Long Beach then people need to take her campaign seriously, including all of her contenders on this site. I notice that no one is really interested in choosing Foster outright. Simply that they do not wish to choose Stevie, without even finding out more about her politics or her campaign. I think that shows naivete on the part of all of her detractors here and even worse, ignorance. Why ignorance? Because her detractors on here refuse to think for themselves about Stevie's political ideas for Long Beach. That is all that should matter when it comes to choosing the mayor. wiseass she's certainly alot better looking than bob foster ModeratePoliticist ExactlyWhatSheSaid--- I think you should be the one to think for your ownself instead of talking about a theoretic, idealistic and insane "real democracy" agenda. Stop calling everyone "burgeois" and actually find out more about bigger politics other than the cynicism you've been shoved by your fellow PSL peers. There ARE people who are NOT voting for Ms. Merino NOT because she's young and "naive," as you so pigeonholed every one in the website. And no one is saying that Bob Foster should run unopposed--- it would obviously be disconcerting (a big DUH). "If we are to simply have real democracy in this society and in Long Beach then people need to take her campaign seriously, including all of her contenders on this site. I notice that no one is really interested in choosing Foster outright. Simply that they do not wish to choose Stevie, without even finding out more about her politics or her campaign. I think that shows naivete on the part of all of her detractors here and even worse, ignorance." --- Condescending much? Again with the "real democracy"? I'm so sick of the "corporations/capitalism is the root of all evil, rah rah rah" strategy. It's an extreme and unrealistic accusation. But anyway, some of us do take her campaign seriously. We are NOT all the degrading brainwashed "bourgeois" PSL members often assume "we" are. I, for one, have been reading countless of articles written in the PSL website mainly due to my fellow peers/students having the tendency to lean far "left" (way before she announced her campaign)... I found that most of them (PSL statements, articles, beliefs) are absolute in theory. They have no room for opposing ideas. AND, they have a way of being totaliratianistic in including and excluding MODERATE political beliefs. Good for her that she's running. I think it's great that she's running. I think it's great that Foster is being challenged. I think it's great that a young person, such as her, is trying it out. But--- seeing as she's been entrenched in PSL politics for a quite a while, I don't think she'll be able to handle the realistic nature of local politics if she DOES become mayor. In fact, I think she'll be politically controlled and manipulated by the rebellious and dengerously idealistic "hip" kids that she surrounds herself with when/if she wins. Belmont Bob Sounds to me like her liberal professors programmed her to try to take on the establishment with their Marxist retoric. Hard working Americans need to fight this attempted takeover. Maybe Bob Foster is the best guy for Mayor or maybe not, but lets not through caution to the wind and let her take another giant step toware socialism. CHARLIE The fact that she even filed for an Executive Position demonstrates her immaturity; Besides her disjointed liberalism, it's an obvious attempt for attention due to her lack of qualifications... George Washington Charlie, Did you, or any of you right-wingnuts dittoheads, know that I, Jefferson, Franklin and many other founders of our nation called ourselves "liberal". Yes we did. Becuase it's a GOOD thing. Erik Can't afford to attend CSULB after all the fee hikes (and more coming)? Run for mayor instead. She deserves props. She is inexperienced. Some of her ideas are foolish and would never pass. But, she's certainly not a lawyer, an ex CEO, or a member of any elite class. I would be tempted to vote for her and would love to see a debate. Dan Lets have a debate on policy pay. Lets have transparency on what a police offer makes....a simple one page summary of salary, benefits, vacation time, overtime etc. Let the people see where there money goes. Then lets have a debate on the budget. All this name calling etc. I love how some people talk about her education, when Bill Gates was a college drop out. Paul While it is tempting to vote for,"Anybody but Bob" this lady is so brainwashed by our "Progressive" educational system that she might as well live on another planet. She says, "cut the police" when we are facing terrible crime, is just one example. CHARLIE Oh yes, George, there are several definations in Webster's; and you also swore that you did not cut down that cherry tree - you betcha...:>) CHARLIE And by the way, GrumpyGuy, do you know how many "Lobbyists" there are on Obama's Czars list? Oh oh! :>) Matthews Clone Is she related to Peter Matthews? She sounds about the same. Phil The one good thing about her campaign issues is that she is highlighting the police suit against the city for dressup, etc pay. This should be a real embarassment to the department. ExactlyWhatSheSaid ModeratePoliticist-You obviously didn't read carefully. I directed my comment at the people ignoring Merino's political positions based on her age. That was the point. Charles A. Twain She may be young and naive but she had the nerve to run, unlike all of us older and wiser folks who were too chicken to run. A sad commentary on the politics of such a big city and democracy in this age of Monday morning digital quarterbacks. Bill Before voting for someone to manage a billion dollar organization ask your question this first, would you hire them to run a billion $$$ + company? If the answer is no, then don't vote for them. ShesYoungandNaive ExactlyWhatSheSaid, age and experience matters. No one is born with wisdom. It doesn't matter what her ideas are if she doesn't have any experience executing them. It doesn't matter what you think about her age, think about what the bosses of the police union will think in a negotiating room with her. You think they'll be bullied or persuaded by her? Truthitis It is refreshing to hear the voices of the faces from the bottom of the well. Many thanks to LB Post for carrying her campaign and allowing the concerns and issues of the other side of LB to be brought to the fore. Pigeon Nutso philosophy!! Probably brain washed at an early age.. CHARLIE It is obvious that the majority of the LB residents are satisfied what our CEO is doing in managing our City; What I don't understand is why so many people are giving a little egocentric student the time of day that doesn't even know BS from shinola - DUH Matt Fleischmann Stevie Morino...wow...I admire your ambitions, but take my advice... don't sell your self short with a mayoral campaign...you would fit in perfectly at the Obama Administration. Graduate Does Stevie know the reason the state had to hike CSU tuitions is because this state's progressive politics have bankrupted it with the welfare system and out of control public employee pension benefits. the professor BRC I think it's the right wing that's brainwashed. Most people come to hold leftwing beliefs because they EXPERIENCE thhe world with its class and race inequality, male domination, endless war, hypocritical religions, corporate-owned media with zero real journalism, and lying politicians and they simply put two and two together. When you read leftist theory, you believe it because it MAKES SENSE - it fits with the real world, not the myths, media distractions, government mind control propaganda, school system half-truth nonsense obedience training, etc. Conservativism is these days a weird combination of race pride, longing for "good old days" when white men ruled everything, total xenophobia, and religious fanatacism. Socialists simply want the majority to control resources, not a tiny minority, and want government to serve human needs, not the needs of capital. It's really not so sinister - unless you've been brainwashed by ronald reagan or something. Anyway, I'm sure you'll dismiss everything I say and continue praying to Jesus with an AK in a suit and tie or whatever, but thought I'd give a shot at saying what's really up. Salaam, shalom, peace. BUGGA BOO BOO To BRC & STEVIE - I've read a lot of funny stuff on the LBPOST Comments, but you two are weird! Your right Matt - they both belong with the Obama Administration, but on another planet - sheesh ExcusesExcuses BRC, most people come to hold leftwing beliefs because they are bitter. Grow up and stop blaming race, religion, or whatever other excuse you have for your problems. Those of us that work hard for what we have are tired of hearing it. HelpMeUnderstand People like BRC do a good job demonstrating how the far left is just as hypocritical as the far right, they're just on the other side of the issue. Those on the far left and the far right have no time for others' opinions. The far left say they want everyone to be equal and "want the majority to control resources", oh unless you've already earned money, or a white guy, or are religious, or you run a business. These people are obsessed with race and class. Relax, take a deep breadth, stop blaming "the system" for your problems and go fix them on your own. Merino Endorses Schipske At Merino's Campaign Kickoff, she threw her backing behind Councilwoman Gerrie Schipske. Take that, Fifth District residents! Charlie Tuna As a matter of fact, BRC, the Bible says: "If you don't work, you don't eat"; So you better get your a** in gear and earn it! While Obama is trying to make like a "Robin Hood" with our tax dollars. Long Beach Lb'er Right-wing wackos - like BRC said -" Conservativism is these days a weird combination of race pride, longing for "good old days" when white men ruled everything, total xenophobia, and religious fanatacism". Just by reading the comments on this page (and reading between the lines) you see this ideology imbedded in people like CHARLIE,ShesYoungandNaive, ModeratePolicist & friends. Then you got your left-wing wackos - HelpMeUnderstand says it best - "Those on the far left and the far right have no time for others' opinions. The far left say they want everyone to be equal and "want the majority to control resources", oh unless you've already earned money, or a white guy, or are religious, or you run a business. These people are obsessed with race and class. Relax, take a deep breadth, stop blaming "the system" for your problems and go fix them on your own." Having been part of the "leftist" mindset, yeah, they do blame a lot of their problems on "the man" or "the system". Once you work hard and apply yourself, the problems go away and you become a stable member of society. But Ms. Merino does bring a fresh perspective. Yes, as citizens we do expect safety. But 2/3 of our General Fund goes to police operartions - and they want more>?! As a Sales Excutive, and someone who deals with "right-leaning" individuals all the time, I must say that conservatives (especially neo-cons), are just as whacked-out (if not more - because of their outdated ideologies)as their socialist lefty-wacko counterparts. Get a job, take care of your finances, taxes, and responsibilities - and smoke some good cannabis at the end of the day - all will be well
