Two New Airlines Join Long Beach Airport by Ryan ZumMallen | Long Beach News | 02.04.10 | | Text Size: +
2:30pm | Frontier Airlines and Allegiant Air will both begin providing flights from Long Beach Airport later this year, according to a press release today. Frontier will being providing non-stop flights from Long Beach to Denver this May, while Allegiant will begin providing flights sometime around August 2010.In addition to the two new airlines, two airlines that already operate at the Long Beach Airport also requested additional flight slots. Delta Airlines and JetBlue Airlines each received one new flight slot. Cumulatively, the four airlines increased the airport to its allowable limit of 41 daily flights. “LGB’s vision is to deliver above our customer’s expectations,” said Mario Rodriguez, Long Beach Airport Director. “To that end, the airport is pleased to announce that our customers, our community, tourists and travelers alike, will be able to enjoy more destinations.” Comments

Bob Yipppppeeeee!!!!! Finally getting an airport and airlines worthy of this city, that will enable our citizens to get to, at least at the present, more popular destinations without driving to LAX or John Wayne. Keep 'em coming, Mr. Rodriguez. From the Midwest Hooray--even we former Midwesterners can now fly easily from Long Beach, via Frontier!! Ron Schweitzer Article did not state where Allegiant will fly to; is this known? Pam That's very good news! Thanks for your hard work Mr. Rodriguez! NLBr Apparently Bob doesn't live under the flight paths. Frank, Carmel by the C I hope Allegiant schedules a stop at Monterey Airport. They did last year, between LAX and here. Talk about convenience! I only wish they were operating here next week because I'd love to get the hell away from here during the tourist onslaught for the AT&T Golf Tournament. What? The guy doesn't golf Pebble Beach? Only time I watch golf, is when I wanna take a nap. Good luck Allegiant and Frontier. I love Long Beach! John Wonderful - now those in Bixby Knolls and California Heights can enjoy more noisy planes. The students in the schools will be interupted with fly overs. Chris Windsor Those flight paths have been there for 80 years. I hope one of Jet Blue's new flights is a daily flight to Honolulu or Kahului. angcila Now we need to get decent way to board..Being older and slow the ramps are terrible..Do something about the boarding problem. Anonymous So what, NLBr? The airport has been there long before these carriers. If you moved into/purchased a home under the flight path, you knew going into it. It's a non-issue. mark Looking forward to more flight options, better parking and a new airport facility. MAF For those of us adults and children alike who love the sight and sound of airplanes and are passionate about traveling...good news indeed. Mario, congrats, and can you get United back? Charter College This is exciting news. This addition will allow more flexibility for our business travelers. Great job Long Beach Airport. DC Agreed Chris. Daugherty Field has been there long before most of us have been, and hopefully it will remain so. If airplane noise bothers you, don't live next to one! Belmont Bob Some people are just negative, the slots the new airlines are filling have just been given up by Alaska. Not more flight, the same number just by different planes. Long Beach is max at 41 flights. Great job Mario, lets get some great new destinations. ron will I be able to get a job outta of this? TT LGB Airport hatred are tiresome and one of the biggest negatives in our otherwise awsome town! M If you think that the Airbus and the Regional Jets are noisy, wait till you get an ear full of an Alegiant MD-80... JR Salazar The more the better. Brilliant! ss As others have stated, the airport has been there for how long? People need to understand that a vibrant growing airport means money and jobs! In regard to noise, different airplanes have different noise footprints. I will state that JetBlue's A320s and Embraer 190s are some of the quietest aircraft out there. Rich See...Long Beach airport is a desireable place as it is, and in spite of JetBlue ragging about our terminals all the time. We do not need to go into debt to remodel our airport, and loose the character. Let's work at making it friendlier...and get JetBlue to STOP landing after 10:00 p.m. Other than that, I don't mind hearing planes pass over my home as they land. Jack Actually, the homes were there before the runway that the airlines use. The runway was built for McDonnell Douglas not a commercial airport. Born in Long Beach I grew up near the airport near the Skylinks golf course. Nobody whined about the airplanes back then. Airlines = JOBS. If the Airlines leave then less jobs. I tired of all these people that buy a house near something then complain of it being there. CHARLIE Bring them on! Sandolla Yay!! LB Airport is the best! @Belmont Bob - glad you added your comment, as it wasn't mentioned in this article - no reason for anyone to complain. At all. More options - Yay! NLB Lady The flights are a fact of life. When I bought my home, I was not aware of the airport impacts. Few people are going to sit on the street for hours to wait for or know to wait for the 2 or 3 obnoxiously loud flights that may occur. In fact, there is nothing like FedEx at 11pm - or consider those 7 am flights, when you really just want to (and need to) sleep in or the 6 or 7 or 8 or 9 pm flights when you just want to hear what was said on the TV. I max out the volume every once in a while just to hear what is being said. I like the airport, but it does impact you if you live nearby. I am not really looking for more interruptions to daily life. So stay safe and quite in your homes. You don't really have to think about us in the path of the airport. It's not really your problem, nor your issue, but a even a slight understanding of our situation would be appreciated. Consider too that the importance of the economic engine of the port and the trucks on the freeway is slowly killing us too. I'm not complaining - it's just not your problem and we have an obligation to protect our homes and our families, as do you. Be thankful for what you have, but understand why folks must speak up. It's pretty much a basic survival instinct. 5th District Warden Great News! Good Discussions. Residents in the flight path (landing & departing) really do get used to the air traffic noise. Too bad POLITICIAN Jerry Schipskee screwed the pooch on the Tesla deal. She should have kept her nose out of discussions. Mayor Bob was pizzzzed about that. dlee Hopefully some airline will go as far as K. C. Mo.,,,,why not? If this is fgoing to be competitive Airport, why cant' it accomodate cross country flights? John Regarding airport noise, the two F/A-18 Marine fighters which arrive each week end make more noise than all of the commercial flights put together. JJ I love flying into Long Beach airport, everything Retro....so cool. Get it Straight @Jack, the runway was here before the houses. When the voters approved it, the runway was extended. So no, the houses were NOT here first. It was extended for a business that left us, so what are we supposed to do, shut it down? Those planes are bringing money, in the form of tourists, business travelers... Long Beach used to be a world-class aviation hub. Let's not drive out the little business we do still get. @dlee: LGB does have cross country flights...Boston, Chicago, New York, DC... RS Glad this does not add more flights and as a loyal LBA flyer appreciate the new options. For those of you who think the value of your home is completely untouched from the value of hundreds of homes in the flight path...you are living a fantasy. Two of the nicest neighborhoods in our city ARE affected when flights increase. The drop in home prices = drop in taxes, retail dollars of homeowners who shop LB, moreoever, all of this adds up to a larger "perception" which does change everyone's home value. What would your home be worth if it was in the city limits of San Marino. Any idea? You can't embrace trashing two of the best neighborhoods in our city without bringing everyone down. Maxey It's good news for LB to have 2 new airlines bring service to our citizens! For those of our neighbors who live under the flight path...do you not understand that this IS NOT adding more planes over your homes, just different airlines. They are taking EXISTING slots, NOT adding more.It just amazes me that you don't seem to believe the facts! We can't have more thn 41 flights, no matter WHO flies the planes. Thank you LB Airport and Mr. Rodriguez Jon in 90808 As a long time LB resident, and a new homeowner near LGB, I had to consider among other things, being rather close to the airport. Unlike several others seemingly have, I was not going to buy a house, then complain about my surroundings. It is just common sense that you don't buy a house under a flight path, next to an event complex, near a sewer treatment plant or anything of the sort if you can not deal with it. I sat/drove around our current house for days before purchasing it (I knew I would look DUMB if I complained about buying a house near an airport, when the airport came first). Sitting there in my truck, I saw a dozens of private planes overhead and decided that was fine. I also noticed that one of the pilots for the Catalina DC-9s likes to turn short and bank hard directly over our house - which was actually a cool selling point! lol. The rare C-17 or F-16 window-rattlers are just fine, as well (Go USA!). Point is, I knew what I was getting into, and so did everyone else who bought near or under the flight-path. Some lucky ones are even are getting $30K+ in soundproofing upgrades, paid for my the FAA. Good for them, I say. However, even this brings out the anti-airport whiners, who did not qualify for the upgrades. Way to go Mario and LGB! 41 flights. Deal with it. It's good for business, jobs and the city overall. Good for me, too. I'll be toasting you from above as I am taking off, finally able to reach family in Denver non-stop from LGB! shirley njos So excited!..my husband and I fly from LB airport every opportunity , and now more choices, can't wait!! Jack I have a solution. For those who love the LB Airport noise, let's reconfigure the runways so the take off and landing go over your homes. Then, everyone will be happy! By the way, I do not live under the flight path - but as the person who posted pointed out, if the airport expands and Long Beach becomes another Ingelwood we all loose. CHARLIE Ya sure Jack, and we can all go back to the horse & buggy and gas lights days; I understand there are no airports on Mars yet, turkey! Travis People need to learn and learn quick that this airport will not be going anywhere anytime soon. If you do not like the noise there is an easy solution: leave. No one is forcing you to live next to the airport. It has been here longer than most of you that are whining and complaining about it. "Boo-hoo the airplane is making noise..." seriously people? Get over it. The thrust reversers are on for maybe 20 seconds at that. The airport provides jobs for thousands of people and is a big part of the economy here. So, I go back to my original comment, if you don't like airplane noise, go live somewhere else. Jack Oh my, my feeling are hurt. Now that all the airport and airline employees have posted (most of whom probably don't live in the city - let's let the citizens of Long Beach vote on this airport just like they did in Orange County and kill this thing. Fred I hear Alaska is dropping Portland-Long Beach. coloneljoe To NLB Lady, What a crock of self induligent whine. Didn't know an airport would impact you? Don't tell me that you also vote! UGG! SoDak Will Allegiant be leaving LAX and moving its flights to LGB? Travis To Jack: I am an airport employee and before you put your foot in your mouth with your smart a@# comments, I LIVE under the flight path and enjoy the sound. Quit Whining! If you don't live under the flight path, you have no right to even speak on the matter, so shut your yap about the noise. and PS, learn how to spell. Lose is spelled with one o. This is not going to be like orange county I'm afraid and we will not "kill it" as you have put it. Don't support I bought a home in Bixby Knolls in 1999 and at that time there were no more than 15 flights daily had I known it would of grown to 41 I would of never bought and I'm not under the flight pattern but our schools are heavily affected which is a shame. mar man To NLB lady, If you really were not aware of the flight path, your real estate agent probably had it in the contract somewhere, they must disclose I believe. That simple. New carriers equal different routes. I think three of the carriers already carried Long Beach to Seattle, hopefully this will give new offerings.
