The Power List is a yearly series that was created back in 2007 when we were sitting around discussing who might be the most powerful people in Long Beach. Instead of writing our own list we put the question to our readers and a tradition was borne. Your answers turned into the original Power List. This was the first series we created to involve our readers and spark discussion about the city.

Longtime LBPOST.com columnist Brian Ulaszewski came up with this idea and once again, we decided to put the question to our readers. The responses were insightful, funny, and eye-opening. November 8, 2008

After Proposition 8 passed and essentially banned same-sex marriage in California, thousands of protestors took to the streets and marched from Redondo & Broadway into downtown Long Beach to peacefully express themselves. It was a powerful and well-organized display of defiance and strength. Our ensuing photo gallery produced some of the most powerful images that we’ve ever published; many of which were sent in by you, our readers, in the first great example of making our readers a part of the LBPOST.com.

This was Brian Ulaszewski’s follow-up to his earlier post about the city’s worst ideas. It only made sense to suggest ten new great ideas for Long Beach to move forward. Brian’s insightful ideas were spanned out over two weeks and many were accompanied by outstanding illustrations from Andrew Wilson. Readers also helped craft this series and the ideas were inspiring, but the triumph of this series was the discussion in the Comments section about where the city is headed and how we will play a part in its future.

After the fatal shooting that rocked Long Beach in late October, a community was hungry for those responsible. Police called a press conference to announce the arrest of two suspects and we hurried out to cover it. Knowing that our readers were eagerly awaiting the information, we provided live updates and photos and had a full article completed before the press conference had even concluded. The heavy rain started to fall and we headed outside to capture photos of the flooding that was sure to occur. What we saw in the streets of Long Beach was mind-boggling. We asked you to send in your own photos and hundreds were sent in and posted on our article, making this our most-reader involved story of all time and a real triumph of the citizen journalism age. The shocking photos went viral and spread around Twitter and Facebook like wildfire. This story has been viewed more times than our entire website was during some months in the past, and it was all made possible by encouraging our readers to be a part of the LBPOST.com.
