Update 10:45am | The Long Beach Mayor Bob Foster released the following statement this morning regarding the Tsunami Advisory. The full statement is printed below:

Tsunami Advisory Issued for Long Beach
As a result of the destructive earthquake early Saturday morning in Chile, a tsunami is propagating over the Pacific Ocean.  Per the National Weather Service in Los Angeles as of 8:03am (ADVERTISEMENT
href="http://www.nws.noaa.gov" target="_blank">http://www.nws.noaa.gov), only a "minor (non-destructive) tsunami event" is expected in Southern California commencing in the late morning to early afternoon hours.
“While indications as of 8:00am this morning do not indicate a significant event,” said Mayor Bob Foster, “be aware that this tsunami activity will likely cause stronger than usual ocean currents and higher than normal tides, especially on south facing beaches. Those that live in low-lying coastal areas should pay particular attention given the confluence of the normal high tide and forecast rains.”
Residents are urged to monitor news outlets for additional updates as the morning progresses.

9:00am |
The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a Tsunami Advisory for the immediate coast of Southern and Central California in reaction to the 8.8 magnitude earthquake in Chile early this morning. As of 8:32am this morning, NWS states:

This is not a Tsunami Warning or Tsunami Watch…however a minor Tsunami may be recorded in some areas of the coast which could produce dangerous currents and surges in harbors and bays. People are advised to stay away from the beaches and marinas. Wave heights and current are amplified by irregular shorelines and are difficult to predict. Wave fluctuations are expected to begin within 30 minutes of the estimated arrival times listed below:

Port San Luis Harbor at 12:35pm PST.
Santa Barbara Harbor at 12:31pm PST.
Santa Monica Harbor at 12:25m PST.
San Pedro Harbor at 12:15pm PST.

Good job getting this up so quick.

We have a grandkids outing to Cabrillo Beach this morning and info like this is so useful. We will delay until 1 pm as the event runs until 3 pm. Thank you!

Belmont Bob
This is a great service for those living around the coast. Thanks.

I guess this is why the breakwater is so important. Sigh...

vidaurri
yes. thanks for the quick info. We needed to know this to plan accordingly. gg

Thanks for the info. I love this site.

Thanks for the heads up. Still raining up here and a fiercer looking storm is heading north to us from Big Sur. Hold onto your hats everyone! "Auntie Em, its twister!" Maybe I'll walk down to Carmel Beach and puff a fatty!

JR?
The breakwater will do nothing for a tsunami. it would be good to get rid of all the home on the penninsula though. Pumping sand from the San Gabrail river would do more benefit.

Danno
24 to 40 inch waves? Not sure why anyone would get excited about that.

Good info! Thanks, Ryan!

at 1:45 pm the water level dropped 5 feet in Alamitos Bay in 10 minutes. It drug bouys out of the bay. I understand the Catalina Express boat is high and dry in the mud in downtown Long Beach!

Maybe this'll get that clean truck program going

A compendium of thought on any subject is always at best a snapshot in time, but in the middle 2000s there was a brief flash of interest in the subject; and of the many who raised a voice, only Los Angeles councilwoman Hahn has remained willing to raise the issue. Crescent City took another million dollars in damage from tsunami in the last decade, after the 1964 fatalities. LONG BEACH Q: Would there be an impact to the positive/negative of the Federal Breawater out there along our slice of the Continental Shelf. RESOURCE: I have a collection of Tsunami clips from those mid-2000s at http://workernews.org/tsunami.htm

DANNO - Those are feet, not inches! and JR? Can you imagine what it would be like without the breakwater - goodbye Belmont Shore! It's events like these that must be considered in the study for the reconfiguration of the breakwater! Yes, thank you, Ryan, for being on the job bright & early - I still think you sleep there.:)

Fear tactics are irresponsible. And they stopped working long ago on this issue. The residents of Long Beach want the breakwater reconfigured and you and Frank Colonna can try to scare eachother as much as you want but we ARE going to fix our beach. To top it off, the port is going to fund it.

BUGGA BOO BOO
Ruts a Ruck Bill Orton - One good Tsunami will fix the whole thing real quick for ya...Brrrrrrrrrr

lbresident
Reconfigure the breakwater. Ignore the crazies.

Like, how about tsunami warnings that are effective for people near the tsunami... So dumb, that the waves are makin their way across PCH, no warning, and people are happy that the warning is here.....

If a breakwater is so important then why don't all the SoCal beaches have them? Because, it's NOT important. It was put in place to protect the Navy (which is no longer here in LB) from WWII era torpedos.

It will be interesting to see if an analysis is done on the effect the Breakwater had on the sudden tide change the other day. The entire pier and dock ramp across from me has been destroyed on Bayshore ave. I understand there was a large movement of water at the LA lighthouse. I also find it hard to believe JR can read.
