10:00am Thursday | The position for Chief of the Long Beach Fire Department is officially open to any candidate holding the rank of Battalion Chief or higher "in a municipal metropolitan Fire Department in California serving a population of at least 250,000," according to the City of Long Beach's open position posting form.

The initial recruitment is being run by Teri Black & Associates, and candidates can apply to TBCrecruiting.com. The salary offered will depend on qualification and experience, though the mid-point of the salary range is $171,000 per year.

The search for a new Chief of the Long Beach Fire Department

has been extended outside the department to include candidates from across the state of California, the LBPOST.com has learned.

Long Beach human resources director Debbie Mills confirmed the information this afternoon, and also mentoned that an open position listing will be posted tomorrow. Candidates interested in the job can apply until March 21, Mills said.

Chief Dave Ellis retired in December 2009 due to illness, after more than five years in the position and 27 years with the Long Beach Fire Department.

Similarly, City Manager Pat West came under fire recently for extending the search for a new Chief of the Long Beach Police Department to include candidates from outside of the department. Former Los Angeles Police Department First Assistant Chief Jim McDonnell was named the new LBPD Chief a few weeks ago, and the Press-Telegram has reported recently that President of the Police Officers Association Steve James lobbied to have West fired largely due to that decision.

Do you think that management learned from pd disaster to put application out to all who are interested first time around, so as not to cloud the process. one would think so.

HIRE THEBEST
We deserve to seek out the best canidate for the Job!Hopefully the LBFD SUPPORT this search! If the best candidate turns out to be from city great.

lbresident
Hopefully who ever is hired will be an existing LB resident or will become one shortly after being hired.

Just the Facts
The best candidate, no matter where they come from or where they live. All else is noise.

I think that all city department directors (including Fire Chief, Police Chief, City Manager, Ass't. City Manager) should be required as part of their contracts to live within the City of Long Beach. After all it is their policies and decision makings that affect us citizens of Long Beach. Perhaps their individual thought processes, decision makings, and policies would change if they had to actually live in the city that they govern. City Councilpersons are required to live in the district that they represent. Why shouldn't the same principle apply to our City Department Heads.

At least firefighters don't carry tasers...don't worry Pat, just make the best choice!!

to "just the facts", I couldn't disagree more. We have a very low percentage of city employees living in the city. It's a huge problem. We need to align city employees with city residents so quality of life issues are just as important as pensions, etc.

To lbresident and godfather, my guess is your both representatives of the unions. I personnally work all around the state and country, when I go to work I do the best job possible. I leave as small as a footprint as I can, and take pride in my work. The idea that a person should be from the city in order to do a proper job is ridiculous! The only reason the lbpoa and fire depts want someone from within is to have an insider who is pushing for an even greater pension package.

G, I don't belong to a union. I am a retired business owner who dealt with unions many times over the years. However I'm also not one to dismiss the opinions of those that do belong to unions. Although I believe that there are issues with unions today such as our current police department suing our cash strapped city for there "preparing for work time". In spite of these I believe unions have and still do provide a valuable service to our communities. Not all governments or business leaders always try to do the right thing by there employees. Unions aside I believe that as many city officials a possible should live here in our city. It's good enough for them to work, it's good enough for us to live in why not them. I'm not trying to be sarcastic at all when I say I don't believe that all are as conscientious as you are with your dedication and work ethic. I could be wrong but I believe the city attorney is required to live in Long Beach. Why not the other managers?

Hello!? The criteria for the new fire chief is Battalion Chief or higher in a city of 250,000 or more. How many of those reside in Long Beach? Would you intend to make that a stipulation of their employment? Do you think that would increase your pool of qualified applicants? Do you imagine a qualified applicant would see that and be thrilled at that level of micromanagement? The same can be said of any other city employee.

Wondering if any one knows how many Fireman-Police now live in Long Beach?Would bet alot commute due to cost or perfer to live elsewhere!

In my humble opinion, Long Beach is just one part of a huge metropolitan family and could care less where THE BEST resides in that family - who knows, THE BEST might reside in Cukamunga...
