Debating Season In Full Swing Tonight by Ryan ZumMallen | Archive | 03.08.10 |
+ 12:35pm | It must be election season, because three different debates will be held tonight to question candidates in three entirely different races for office. The Long Beach Press Club will hold a debate between candidates for the City Attorney position, while the Parent Teacher Association will hold a debate for candidates in the race for City Prosecutor as well as a debate for candidates in the race for First District School Board. The Press Club debate is the third such public forum in the organization’s Debates At ‘Da Beach series, and will be held at Gaslamp Restaurant on 6251 E. PCH, beginning at 7:00pm. Incumbent City Attorney Robert Shannon will face challenger – and current City Prosecutor – Tom Reeves for the seat. The Press Club has held debates between candidates for the 9th and 7th District City Council seats. The LBPOST.com will be a guest panelist in the upcoming debate between 5th District candidates, to be held at Eldorado Restaurant on March 29. Click here for a complete list of upcoming Press Cub debates. The other series of debates will be held by the PTA tonight at the Hughes Middle School auditorium at 3846 California Avenue, beginning at 7:00pm. Incumbent 1st District School Board member Mary Stanton will face challenger Jeff Price. At 7:45pm, City Prosecutor candidates Timothy O’Reilly and Doug Haubert will square off. Ever-present moderator Alan Tolkoff will host the event and questions will be taken from the audience. Happy debating!

Del Heintz Charter would entertain, for the future, televising certain debates on a taped delayed basis. Please contact me to discuss. Nikol Wish I could come watch! Good luck :) Paul Reeves is a hard, no smile,no nonsense, type of guy. No touchy feelie for him. Just the kind of personality, not to mention his fine education, and background for the job. He can give true expert advice to our Council and keep this city from more corruption. He is a strong supporter of neighborhoods, in addition to his personal integrity. None better. Dave Hall The Young Democrats Club will also be hosting a meeting tonight, Monday the 8th at 6:30 at Hof's Hut in Belmont Shore to discuss the election. DAVE HALL, LBCC Board of Trustees Area #3 Candidate LBCityGirl After watching tonight's debate I am definitely casting my vote for Robert Shannon. One of the most ridiculous arguments I ever heard against dispensaries/collectives came from Reeves tonight. He said that if medical marijuana was really about helping people it would be free! And I could not help but notice that if our health care industry in general were about helping people it would be free! But it is not. And incidentally, last week I paid over $90 for a prescription (and I have medical insurance) from CVS. I'd suggest we hold pharmaceutical companies to the same lofty expectations of good will toward others that Reeves thinks medical marijuana providers should have! Let's face it--Reeves is a prosecutor--it is what he does. Shannon has far more experience at understanding the position of city attorney, not only because he's been doing it, but because he has a more moderate point of view. Reeves tends far too much to the right wing arena of Republicanism for my taste. Two Cents @lbcitygirl You're just a pothead. Besides Shannon is right-wing too. You're just hearing what you want to hear. Reeves is speaking from the perspective that marijuana is illegal my dear and that's what you potheads always forget. So if it was really about helping people it would be free. Your pharmaceuticals are not free because they are legal and made by for-profit companies. To those of us whose minds are not clouded by pot smoke, the dispensaries are a joke. LBCityGirl @two cents...give me a break! I'd agree that Shannon is moderate--he is not nearly as one sided in his views as Reeves. And I get that Reeves has not expanded his world view past 1956 and that is why he can't get past the fact that marijuana is rapidly becoming legal. Technically, marijuana is illegal at the Fedral level, but if I am not mistaken, the original intent of our constitution was that states had the right to make laws that superceded federal laws--states were to maintain some sovereignty. In my opinion, this make medical marijuana legal in California regardless of Federal Law. Incidentally, I believe in complete equality for gay people too--are you now going to call me gay? Two Cents @Lbcitygirl Marijuana is rapidly becoming legal where? It is still schedule I drug on DEA list. You're smoking too much, it is not legal dear. What does your last sentence have to do with the conversation? Oh that's right, you're stoned.
