The Long Beach Arts & Culture Registry (www.artslb.org/registry) was created to be an inclusive and comprehensive opportunity for all artists ‐ from music to ceramics; acting to writing ‐ the registry supports visual, performing, literary and folk art.

Artists and organizations are encouraged to sign up. Professional, emerging and student artists in Long Beach can sign up online and post photos, video, web links, contact information and more. It is free, and takes minutes to sign up.

Registrants can get updates from the Arts Council about grants, events and other opportunities, and the Arts Council is committed to promote it.

The registry was researched and developed by the Leadership Long Beach Class of 2009, who joined forces with the Arts Council for Long Beach and City of Long Beach Economic Development and Cultural Affairs Bureau. The Registry website programming was donated by Ryan Smolar. The Registry is an on‐going free service hosted by the Arts Council for Long Beach.

"Linking the public to great artists whether it's visual, literary or performing artists is a terrific service,” said Craig Watson, Executive Director of the Arts Council for Long Beach.

"Having a registry where artists can participate, be listed and their work shown is just a marvelous contribution to our community,” said Robert Swayze, Director of the Economic Development and Cultural Affairs Bureau.

“We encourage businesses and organizations to use the Registry when looking for creative talent,” said Rachel Potucek, Leadership Long Beach project team leader and Arts Council Board member. “Plus, this project had virtually no expenses because everyone on the team donated a piece to the overall goal.”

Yeah, usually good ideas like this either get passed up, or are executed badly... in this case GOOD JOB! I signed up quickly, and now have my own "profile". Still could use some graphical development, but pretty awesome so far.

Hi Sander - I am always happy to see more attention paid to local arts and culture in Long Beach but I was wondering... what is the difference between The Long Beach Arts & Culture Registry and LongBeachCulture.org? LongBeachCulture.org is an extremely flexible website and has served the community well for so many years and from what I recall has always been extremely welcoming to local artists of all types. In any case, I applaud your hard work in both endeavors. Thanks Sander.

I was wondering what the difference is between this registry and the previous one that was hosted on the ACLB site. There were a number of artists who were registered previously (myself included) and I notice that all those previous listings are gone. Just wondering. What will be different about this one and why was it reinvented?

I guess there isn't anyone that knows the answers to these questions left over a week ago. That's too bad.

Personally I think the ArtsLB.org site needs an category update but the concept (like LongBeachCulture's and ThePrimeSpot.com's before it - I changed my format AFTER paying for the creation of about 12 artist's pages at $100 a pop!) ... is a great one! ONE registry WILL help link everyone together. Next Step: This registery needs to be attached to the LB Convention Ctr and Visitor's Bureau websites/kiosks like I recommended on another downtown site... THEN linked to all of the Cruiseships, Airlines and visitors to Shoreline Village SO, after they have a wonderful time in our city they can TAKE A PIECE OF LONG BEACH HOME with them on the plane, train, automobile or by sending it home via 1-800-ask-usps! Lorenzo & Shibori: Other websites started promoting Ryan Smolar's LimeLight site at events Sander took part in and then he (Ryan) programmed the Art Council site. Sander: I don't know WHY you wouldn't keep at least the Soundstage part of LongBeachCulture.org as "Blog Archives" - at least! You have alot of great interviews on here, my favorite is www.tinyurl.com/LouiseKripalLBC

Lorenzo, the primary difference between LBC and the new registry is that it is being supported by Arts Council for Long Beach. The functionality issues were far less important to me than having a single registry for the community, rather than several competing sites. Shibori, the previous registry was static. It was basically hand coded, or done with some simple process to convert data to a web page. The new site is dynamic, and database driven. This allows for far more flexibility, searchability, scalability, etc. KaRi, I'll look into migrating the older interviews to the LBC blog, which will remain active for the time being.
