LBCC Football: Skid Snapped With First Conference 'W'

For Vikings fans, it was a great Halloween treat: the LBCC football team earned its first Southern Conference win of the year thanks to a 29-13 win at Santa Ana College on Saturday night.

The win halted a three-game losing streak for the Vikings and improved their record to 2-6 overall and 1-3 in conference play.

Freshman quarterback Kevin Lubner threw for 268 yards on 23 of 36 passing with one touchdown and an interception. His one-yard touchdown run at the 9:31 mark in the second quarter capped a 72-yard LBCC drive and gave the Vikings a 9-7 lead.

Late in the third quarter, Lubner drove the Vikings 91 yards over 14 plays and closed it with a five-yard TD pass to freshman Deondre Powell that gave the Vikings the lead for good at 15-10.

Freshman running back Daveon Barner sealed the win with a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns (2, 3 yards). He ended the game rushing for 106 yards on 26 carries, his sixth 100+ yard game of the season.

Freshman David Covey connected for a 43-yard field goal in the first quarter that gave LBCC an early 3-0 advantage.

The LBCC defense put together its best game of the season and allowed a season-best 205 yards of offense to Santa Ana (3-5, 0-4 SC). Freshmen defensive back DeAndre Lewis led the Vikings with 10 tackles (6 solo) and sophomore safety Genesis Fonoimoana totaled seven tackles (3 solo) with an interception.

Long Beach returns to action next Saturday (Nov. 7) when it travels to Fullerton College for a 6 pm Southern Conference game.

Is it just my impression, or do all community colleges have only one of three color schemes:
1. Black and red
2. Blue and gold
3. Red and gold

Trust me...it's just you. You forgot that among notables, Cerritos College uses blue in their schemes and Grossmont uses green.

Aside from that...I must be seeing zombies; this team knows how to win again.
