USA WVB Sweep Mexico by J.J. Fiddler | LBSU | 06.29.09 | | Text Size: +
The United States maintained its lead in Pool A of the Eighth Women's Pan American Cup with a convincing 25-19, 25-14, 25-11 victory over Mexico Sunday evening at the University of Miami's BankUnited Center. Nancy Metcalf scored a match-high 20 points for the U.S., which included 16 kills, three blocks and an ace. Danielle Scott-Arruda and Jordan Larsen each recorded 11 points in the victory. Mexico (0-3) was led by captain Migdalel Ruiz and Martha Revuelta, who each racked up nine points. Olivia Meza chipped in four points in the loss. The U.S. serve kept Mexico off-balance the entire match as the Americans held an 8-0 ace margin, keyed by Christa Harmotto's four aces. The Americans also led the block category with an 8-4 margin. "Mexico is a good team and played hard tonight," U.S. Head Coach Hugh McCutcheon said. "They present some challenges for us an made us adjust and we were able to accomplish that." "Mexico dug a lot of balls and touched a lot of other balls off the block and made us adjust," Scott-Arruda said. "It is good to know that we can play in a variety of ways and win." "We are not happy with the result, but we made a good match in playing one of the top teams in the world," Mexico Head Coach Samuel Cibrian said. "I congratulate the USA team. We have a lot of younger players, and we have improved from the other days. We have two matches left in pool play, and we want to win those next two matches for a good position in the classification round." United States plays Peru (2-1) at 8 p.m. ET on Monday, the
fourth of five consecutive pool play matches before the classification round.
Mexico returns to the court at 3 p.m. ET on Monday versus Guatemala. Written by J.J.
