The Jackrabbits have made amazing strides in coach Bart Roper's second year at the helm of the Poly program.

“I couldn't be more proud of the way my kids left it all out on the mat,” Roper said. “But I can't take anything away from (Coach) Marshall Thompson, because he's got a great team over there and they earned the Moore League title.”

The Preciado and Touch brothers have come up huge this week for Poly and the two sets of brothers went 4-0 again on Thursday.  Jesus Preciado (14-0), along with Warren's 103-pound Damien Gomez (39-0) remain the lone area wrestlers without a loss.

“I am really proud of my teammates for having heart and fighting until the end,” Jesus Preciado said. “We have made incredible progress this year and we'll try and continue to get better for league finals.”

The Rams got its stiffest test to date on Thursday, but did what champions do by persevering through adversity.

“It was much closer than we expected and all the credit for that goes to how hard Poly came out and battled us tonight,” Millikan captain Nick Pena said. “I am also very proud of all the guys on my team that were there and competed, because it truly was a family out there counting on each other. We are excited to move forward as a team with what we had out on the mat tonight.”

Pena is 35-2 with 31 pins this season and is just four pins shy of the Millikan High career record of 96.

In other Moore League action:

Lakewood finished second this year with a convincing 52-16 victory over Wilson on Thursday evening.  Despite having their ML dominance reversed this season, the Lancers battled with a very young and inexperienced roster and were well-coached.

Winners for the Lancers included Anthony Carmona (112), Charlie Brady (119), Ryan Bautista (125), Cody Gurule (130), Kimo Napohaku (135), Nathan Batres (140), Evan Ritchie (152), Andrew Becaira (160) and heavyweight Alex Barillas.

Wilson's Miguel Peralta (171) finished his senior season without a loss in league action and is the favorite to win next Saturday's Moore League Invitational at Wilson.

So, after an entertaining season, the final Moore League standings for 2009-10 go Millikan, Lakewood, Poly, Wilson.  Come back to LBPostSports for more wrestling coverage next week!

As I said Rams. Great job!

Throwing the gauntlet down. We're taking it back next season. So long as you get the right grapplers, Andy Miramontes...

Congrats Millikan
I am an ex Lakewood wrestler from the late 70's-early 80's and now help out coaching at Poly. Years ago we were taught to hate Millikan and the rivalry was intense. I want to compliment the Millikan wrestling team for wrestling tough this year and winning a well deserved championship. I am extremely impressed with Nick Pena both on and off the mat. This kid carries himself with confidence but most of all with class. Marshall, great job this year also as these kids are an example of your leadership!!!

on the mat
I was thrilled to see our boys come through in a match that tested their resolve and yet, have to give it up to Poly for scaring the shi* out of everyone in that gym by competing your ass off! I can't believe the 103 pound dwarf sold his team out though. That is completely unforgiveable.

Moore League fan
The competitiveness makes me even more excited about the league finals next week. All four main teams should have league champs and should represent the Moore League well at the CIF Individuals at Godinez HS in Santa Ana three weeks from tomorrow.

Millikan Wrestler
Someone spelled Ben's last name wrong. It's Bermudez not Bermuedez

Great job Rams! A very classy program, and very classy kids getting their just reward. . . Wonderful to see.
[BTW, the comment by 'on the mat' is quite inappropriate. Don't know why the young man you are dismissively referring to (who has been dedicated team member for 4 years) was not there but this is not the place for attacks unsupported by anything in the article. Show some class.]

Show Me The Money
Is the Ray Gulmatico post on here the state champ from Lakewood?

lkwd
what happend to kuwata...why didnt he wrestle

the real realist
When someone turns his back on his teammates and isn't disciplined to make weight and worse yet, he won't sit by and cheer on his teammates, he deserves no protection from people. He is a selfish, angry little man who has let his program and his teammates down. Ask any one of our kids what they think of him not working as hard as them or his not doing the right thing by going to Poly with us and root our guys on. The pc world where everyone only says nice things is gone.

Creighton Monteguegh once said, "we now rest on the mantra, " pin yoour ears back, yes it is tough with ear guards, do it never the less." Lakewood grapple me more titles.

the real real realist
Academics is more important then starving one self and rolling around on a mat with other dudes. Any sport where you can't run is not a sport. It is bowling on a mat, i.e a recreation a hobbie !

wrestling is life
That is the dumbest thing I've ever seen. Saying that wrestling is not a sport? I'd love to see you get any basketball, football or baseball player out on the mat and see how long they could last without throwing up. You should keep your anti-wrestling hatred to yourself, because you don't know what you're talking about. But I am sure you're just a fattie sitting at home, hammering down those potato chips, drinking soda with a 40-inch waist and hadn't seen a girl naked in 15 years, so you felt like you needed to rip into someone/something so you didn't feel like the complete loser that you are.

To wrestling is life
Wrestling is a hobbie,a recreation like bowling. Actually I am a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I submit on my back, you lose on your back.

To JR Salazar:
dude what makes you think Lakewoods gonna win it next year?
all you got coming back mainly is Kimo, and who do we got coming back next year? lets see..half of the guys on Varsity this year such as Arroyo, Bermudez, Potter, Taylor, the Jessie Twins: Orlando/Oscar and Anthony.
this is a team to be not under-estimate at all. Lakewood has a great wrestling team dont get me wrong buddy, but Millikan will be always know as the Best Wrestling team in the Moore League history.

Congrats Millikan!
It is no surprise how well you guys did. Disappointing not to see Kuwata though, his matches are always intense. I'm very proud of Poly though, the light weights were just pinning Millikan like crazy for a while. I heard Preciado was out for a match or two because of his back? I'd like to see how he'd do at MLF.

To Jordan Sanders
I would say I think Lakewood is going to win, because we have 8658 students and myopic perceptions. Some call it confidence.

Jordan Sanders
To Jordan Sanders(JR Salazar i assume):
well you can only take confindence so far, but if u have too much confindence you'll lose. cant let anyone get the best of ya if you have that too much rather than compete. Moore League finals are in a week, and we'll see who REALLY is the top dawgs of Moore League Wrestling

To Jordan Sanders
Tell that to Michael Jordan,Kobe Bryant, and Morely Shaffer ?

Jordan Sanders
To Jordan Sanders(JR Salazar):
dude what does MJ have to do with High School Wrestling?!
Thats the pros, this is High School man. it takes a TEAM effort to wins and thats why the Rams wrestling team is the 2010 Wrestling Champions
its something you would NEVER understand. this saturday WILL decide who is the top team in the moore league. THe FInals are at wilson high school at 9 AM. Mark it on your calenders

JR Salazar
Jordan:

The REAL JR Salazar speaks. Hold your horses here, I got some ramdom imposter posting under my handle again.

"Creighton Monteguegh once said, "we now rest on the mantra, " pin yoour ears back, yes it is tough with ear guards, do it never the less." Lakewood grapple me more titles."

Creighton Monteguegh? Never heard of him. Show who you are, imposter.

Now then...
Lakewoood's going to take it next year because I am confident Andy will get the right grapplers to take back the title. They may only have Kimo coming back, but with the current JV and some new up-and-comers, he'll have competent company.

The gauntlet has been thrown. It's up to you and your lot to pick it up.

LHS Wrestling Fan
Lets get it straight here! Lakewood Varsity has a young team, only 3 are Seniors and our Juniors are only going to improve. Keep it up Lakewood, with hard work I'm confident you can do it next year! Go Wood...

Jordan Sanders
TO JR:
sorry for the comments
i thought that was you, but clearly thats not. haha
but both teams are gonna do well next year
Millikan has back Potter, Anthony, Both Jessie twins, Arroyo, and Sam Taylor. Plus the JV team is really good. so next year its going to be just down to the wire next year for sure

James Potter
first of all"on the mat", dont disrespect james kuwata(the little person). you dont even go to millikan so how would you know what he did or didnt do. he never sold out his team. and it is forgivable since we all already forgave him for not making weight.
second of all "the real realist" who are you and who do you think you are talking about james like that. you dont even know him.
