Moore League Football Summer Passing League by J.J. Fiddler | Poly | 07.06.09 | | Text Size: +
In what proved to be a great day for high school football
fans, Poly hosted Jordan, Lakewood and Cabrillo in a round-robin two hours of
7-on-7 touch football. On Thursday, I wrote about how these summer passing league
games usually involve teams that won’t see each other during the regular
season. But for the second year,
the Moore League went against the usual. “I
think it’s good for the league,” said Cabrillo head coach A.J. Luke. “You talk about team building, but this
is Moore League building… it’s fun, and exciting to come together.” Poly
defensive coordinator Jeff Turley echoed the sentiment, “You get to see each
other in a different setting.
These guys know each other and they get to just come out here and play. When it’s the regular season, it’s a
different game.” These
passing leagues are a different game for sure. And when the Moore League is involved, it’s a game where the
defense can get in some good work. Here
are some notes I took down… - First
of all, this is a strange form of torture. Someone blew a whistle and I desperately wanted it to be
the first whistle of the season.
September can’t get here soon enough. - As
you can see from the video, most of the offense was limited to short routs and
dump off passes. That means we’re
in for another Moore League season dominated by good defense. Like that’s any surprise. - Offensively,
Lakewood looked the sharpest.
Quarterback Jesse Scroggins showed off his strong arm, and with all the
time in the world in the pocket he only missed a handful of throws. Without the rushing lineman, these
passing league games are more about receiver timing and defensive reads. - Speaking
of defense, defensively everyone looked good. But I have to say, Cabrillo looked like they have the most
overall potential. They are young,
and wow are they fast. Remember
these three names: Tyrone Swinton (CB) John Scanlin (LB) and Chris Gooden (S). - We
all know Jordan quarterback John Timu can lead an offense, but don’t forget
about his ability as a free safety.
The interception on the video was just one of two against Poly. - You
hear sports fan say all the time, “oh, he’s a natural.” Watching Lakewood defensive back Dion
Bailey play, that’s all I can think.
His half speed seems like everyone else’s game speed, and he’s an
absolute ball hawk. Poly’s Cameron
Jackson also looked very comfortable in the secondary. - Speaking
of good defenders, if you thought Jordan linebacker Princeton Fuimaono couldn’t
get much better, keep in mind he’s had a year to get stronger. And he did. - A
lot has been made of Poly looking for new playmakers. He didn’t have his best game, but quarterback Derek Stewart
looked good at Dana Hills and was very accurate today. He doesn’t have a huge arm, but his
short passing game fits perfectly with what Poly wants to do on offense. - If
you were watching for an unknown player that could make a name for himself this
fall, you we’re probably looking at Jordan receiver Keith Nixon. The basketball player turned wide out
is becoming a favorite Timu target. - I
talked to a coach (shall remain nameless) who said, “I think Poly is at a
disadvantage here… they get by a lot with intimidation, with the Friday night
lights and those gold helmets… but out here it’s tee shirts and shorts. We can look at them out here and say,
‘see, they’re just like you’.” But
LBPostSports reader and all around awesome guy Tyler Hendrickson had a
different take, “Poly is young.
They need to be in the stuff a little bit. They need to see what the Moore League is all about.” Seriously,
can we just start the season right now? Written by J.J. yes sir jj for the 2nd passing league coverage dana and polys you did not cover the QB to be you show 2 qb's in your clip td pass is dylan lagarde and the intro is derek stewart at the end of the clip so one is islander and the other is black thanks post supporter Hey JJ nice coverage of the games, I got a chance to get out there and see them, and I have too say Cabrillo is NO slacker what so ever. You mentioned Swinton(CB) scanlan(LB)and even gooden(S) but Malcolm Manuel the other cb had a GREAT showing against Jordan. Too bad he got hurt against Lakewood, im looking forward to watching him and his teamates this season, go moore league! Paula Great write-up, JJ; you're making me hungry! JJ Thanks Paula, i hope it's hungry for pigskin. post supporter, you're right about Manuel. and yes sir, no one knows who will be under center for the 'Rabbits, so I just mentioned one kid. Coach Lara told me after the games, "We won't know who will be QB until we get the pads on... everybody looks cute in shorts." billb It looks like the Moore League football may end up more like the baseball season last year. Polys still the favorite, but don;'t rule any body out. See ya in the booth Poly Fan JJ excellent write up for the last two passing league games. Your coverage has been very accurate. QB Derek Stewart did an impeccable jog at the Dana Hills tournament, and did a good job for all other passing league games with accuracy, as you reported on for poly's varsity team. Awesome reporting! Dude wheres my car In reply on comments made by Post Supporter, Cabrillo maybe have NO Slacker's with the names that you have mentioned, there only down fall is lack of depth, most of these player that you have named off plays both ways and both offensive and defensive line are TOO soft, and the kid that plays quarterback lacks the skill to play the position.. the point to this is not to be mean but issues Cabrillo will be up against this upcoming season...Good Luck And God Bless Don't hate, Congradulate I saw a very excited Cabrillo team and lets not forget that the majority will be Jrs. next year. From what I remember, Coach A.J. started at least 10 Sophs. last year. There is no way you can compare last yrs. line to the upcoming season. I'm a true Poly fan but I love what Coach A.J. is doing over there. Dude Wheres My Car In response to that last comment, yes I do agree coach A.J is doing a mighty fine job at Cabrillo and yes they are a very exciting group of players to see especially {Chris Gooden } and no i was not at the game, just thru the grapevine like i said before Cabrillo are not very deep and the Q.B position is still a suspect and no you are right i cant compare last years line to this year, my only question is the committment, and heart and also yes cabrillo did have a few 10th graders play last year, anways good luck during the season and i think that your wrong i am not a hater i just call it for what it is.. Pirate Down here in Oceanside, the Pirates are excited to play the elite LB Poly team this season. Oceanside is public school of 2300 students and without recruiting, and losing students to nearby El Camino and Carlsbad HS they have the top football program in the San Diego area. Win or lose, the Pirates will leave their heart and soul on that field September 25 ! They have alott of respect for LB Poly, dont under estimate them.
