Boys' BBall: Poly Wraps Up Crown, Massey Gets 500th W by Mike Guardabascio | Poly | 02.10.10 | | Text Size: +
Who said we wouldn't have any drama in the last week of the season? Oh, that's right…we did. Well, the playoff seedings are as locked up as we thought they would be, but that doesn't mean there wasn't plenty of drama on the penultimate night of the 2009-2010 Moore League boys' basketball season. Poly 76, Cabrillo 51 The Jackrabbits are undefeated in Moore League play, and
currently ranked no. 2 in CIF—they didn't want to jeopardize either status on
their last home game of the regular season, but things were certainly up in the
air at halftime, thanks to Christian Verdugo's 15 first-half points, which put
the Jags up 28-25 at intermission. Poly got aggressive in the third, drawing nine Jaguar fouls,
and scoring a lot of transition points—they outscored Cabrillo 24-9 and never
looked back. Robert Nixon, Jr. had
19 points, and Shelton Boykin had 18.
Verdugo finished with 21 for the Jags, and Tony Bell scored 19. The win clinches the Moore League crown for the Rabbits,
their first since 2003. Thanks to Tyler Hendrickson for the info! Jordan 67,
Wilson 49 Ron Massey had to miss out on the Century Club Banquet
Tuesday night, where he was being given the Frank Vessels Junior Award, because
he was too busy winning his 500th career game, in his 28th year coaching the
Panthers. His son, Ron Massey,
Jr., accepted the award on his behalf, while Massey collected a guarantee of
the league's three-seed, as well as the 500th-win honor. Compton 73, Millikan 67 The Rams needed to beat Compton on the road in their final
game of the season to get their twelfth win, which would allow them to apply as
a CIF wild card. They gave the
league's two-seed all they could handle, and led by four at halftime, but
ultimately fell short. Cliff Sims led the Tarbabes with 21, Anthony January had 16,
and Alan Guei had 12. Leaders for
Millikan were Malcolm Whittington (28 points, 22 in the first half), Andrew
Scott (17 points) and Devon James (9 points). A Man With A Vision What was left out of the Poly/Cabrillo story - It was Senior night at Poly so the starters did not play in the first period if they did the first half would have been like the second half of the game! LB Poly Fan Congrats to LB Poly Boys Varsity and JV Boys Varsity games. Very exciting to watch last night!!!! JR Salazar Moore of the same for the Rabbit hoopsters. Congrats to Ron, too. LB Poly Just ANOTHER title to add to the trophy case. No one comes close to Poly tradition. We win titles and go about our business. We don't rush the court or field in celebration, WE have been their many times before. So hard to be a RABBIT!!!! JR Salazar Poly has the edge over Lakewood in hoop to say the least. However, football is our "pie in the sky". Kudos never the less. Go Ron. LB Poly "Pie in the sky"? 1 win every 28 years does not qualify as one program having an advanatage over the other. Last time I checked: Poly: 18 Cif Championships Lakewood: 0 Cif Championships Do you even want to count Moore League titles? Probably not. coach off topic a lil.... but congrats on the ASU schollie to Alden Darby.. what an incredible player to watch the past few years. Good luck and work hard every day on & off field. Lots of luv 4 Darby, Silver, Derek, Trejo. Never forget u guys.
