Long Beach Poly head coach Raul Lara and his Jackrabbits lead the Moore League in a recently released preseason poll.

A preseason poll released today shows the high school football programs of Long Beach Poly and Lakewood leading the Moore League in a very competitive PAC-5 Division.

The official CIF Southern Section poll shows Long Beach Poly ranked #4 in the PAC-5 Division, with Lakewood right behind them in the #5 spot. Wilson High School did not rank in the Top 10 but did receive votes and was named an

honorable mention. The division is headed by #1 Mission Viejo, #2 Mater Dei and #3 Servite.

In speaking with all seven Moore League coaches for our official 2010 season preview last week, everyone agreed that defending champion Lakewood should be considered the favorites to repeat this season. This poll seems to disagree.

Poly head coach Raul Lara made no bones about his team's expectations for this season, telling the LBPOST.com last week, "We're shooting for a national championship." With the talent and returning players that Poly boasts this season, there's little question as to whether the Jackrabbits are capable of such a feat. But they'll certainly face a worthy foe in Lakewood, who are playing with a chip on their shoulder even as defending champs and now have even more motivation to win the Moore League.

Poly kicks off their season by hosting Bakersfield this Thursday at Veterans Stadium, while Lakewood will host Locke at home on Friday. The Wilson Bruins and their new-look spread offense will play at Huntington Park.

Do you agree with the rankings?

Lakewood
I don't think so especially the way they played against St. John Bosco. Sorry Poly maybe next year.

Poll looks good to me... who knows at the high school level, but Poly plays the Drillers at Vets on Thursday, not Friday. 7PM.

Obviously CIF personnel didn't attend the weak exhibition Poly put on at SJB scrimmage last week. What stellar defense???

victor
coach mike fillipow is getting to old to be effective as a coach.

JR Salazar
Yep, no pressure on my boys this year. Spot on.

Lakewood is at home Friday night

Sorry for the mistakes, guys! Poly plays on Thursday and Lakewood is at home on Friday. See you all at the game!

C.I.F. Southern Section High school football championships are won in December not August. Preseason polls are a dime a dozen, it depends on whom you are asking.

Rankings are meaningless except to make us all feel warm & fuzzy, right? And until Poly beats Lakewood this year, Lakewood is the better team. Pretty simple concept and the only real world way to judge whose is the better team. Right now, Lakewood is the better team. Just the way it is in sports. And scrimmages are a good indicator of...scrimmages. After all our Moore Teams compete in their 1st games, we'll have at least some idea of where they are at. Until then, just blog talk.

I agree that lakewood is #1 until be beat them this year. But at the scriammage thankfully...Coach Lara did not show all of his arsenault....and rested alot of the starting lineman on both offense and defense...so he did want to expose some of the 2nd and 3rd string to get them exposed. So trying to stay humubled, when SJB kicks a lineman after they were pancaked by our lineman,,,then the ref sees it and tells Poly to get him...we did...but that was SJB's superbowl...they will get no more...from now on it is poly vision..to come in our house and take a victory you will have to battle..

Chaiyse Hales will run the offense this year and will do a great job...Lets get em POLY.

Very well stated Poly Mom. I've seen plenty of teams get up for a scrimmage or a passing league but is pure garbage when it really counts. Poly has the reputation but also has the athletes that have played in big games since early youth football. I think Lara really held his hand close to his chest for the scrimmage. I will save judgement on Poly until after tomorrow's game with Bakersfield. Out of respect to a past formidable champion with several rings, that is the least we can do. I think it was Bosco's Superbowl and had much to prove while Poly probably didn't think much about it. If anything this game turned Poly around and woke a sleeping giant. Yes the standings are still 0-0. Who really cares about scrimmages? Go Jags!

Polymom? What game were you watching? I hate when people turn events around to make it favorable for them. Poly was taking cheap shots all day because they were getting beat. The fight started when YOUR player took a shot at one of ours because he got owned all day. It was far from Bosco's Superbowl as you put it, for that matter Bosco plays 5 teams in league that are every bit as good as Poly if not better. Dont flatter yourself, you guys got destroyed in a SCRIMMAGE and it means nothing. Please, save some respect that I have for the Poly faithful. Good luck this year.

Give em Hell Poly!!!!!

@victor: what are you talking about? this article is about football and fillipow is the boys cross country coach. and since when is someone's age the defining factor in their effectiveness as a coach? i ran with him as my coach for four years and he teaches hard work and consistentcy in training will lead to positive results, which can be displayed by his moore league winning xc team. AND he can get out there and run any and every practice with his runners, and run faster and farther than alot of them, so for being so "old", he's pretty amazing.

As Coach McGinty would say "Lets play some football". Then be positive or negative to the teams that fair play is on the field not these blogs, GO POLY!
