Former Long Beach State star and 23-year veteran of the PGA Tour Paul Goydos shot a flippin' 59 in his opening round at the John Deere Classic in Silvis, Illinois on Thursday. Goydos becomes just the fourth golfer to shoot sub-60 on a professional tour. In history. In the history of golf.

The last golfer to shoot a 59 was David Duval in 1999, according to the Associated Press.

Goydos made headlines in 2008 when he nearly stormed the field and won the PGA Players Championship while wearing an "LB" hat that he purchased himself at the airport that morning. When he returned home to Long Beach, Goydos was honored at Legends' Sports Bar, where the famous hat hangs to this day.

Goydos didn't win, but his success at that tournament and subsequent ones has drawn increased attention to the Long Beach State golf team, which recently added a new head coach with the hiring of Ryan Ressa.
